Default Need a direction

Chess attracts me, I am so passionate about the game. I can tell you
the history of every piece and master. It is possibly the perfect game,
the best game. I feel so strongly about it. Yet I cannot play myself
out of a paper bag. My abilities fall short of my emotions of the game.
Which makes it even more frustrating. I have played and examined games,
even sponsored my school's chess club (If you can do, then coach eh?).
Yet my skills do not seem to improve or evolve. I have CM 10 and am a
member of FICS and play using Babachess.

Being a schoolteacher I do not have the luxury of hiring a tutor. I
feel what I need is a system, a direction, someone that is strong
enough in chess to point me into a direction, or set me a goal. Reading
books, examining games, appears way too random and unorganized. Like
walking into a classroom and reading the textbook at a random point.

Anyone care to give me some ideas? A system?

Since you have Chess Master 10, you might try playing some of the
tournaments starting with the lowest rated ones and working up.

You may also want to play all of the defined personalities working your
way up through the list. Decide on three openings to use one as white
and two as black against 1.e4 and d4.

I suspect there are many who feel the same way. I'm wondering how good
do you want to become? There is a limit to how good an individual can
improve, based on his natural talent. It must be admitted that there
are some who will never play themselves out of a paper bag, no matter
how strongly they feel about the game.

It's impossible to prescribe a cure without diagnosing a disease first.

Why not post a couple of losses, against humans, at slow time controls,
in the newsgroup and then maybe we can offer meaningful advice?

The reason chess is the wonderful and attractive game it is, is because of
it's insurmountable complexity and depth. Your comments suggest that you're
looking for short cuts, like scholar's mates and the like. This is not
learning chess. There is no "system" that will be optimal for you to
improve at the game. Reading chess books, and doing the exercises that the
author tells you to do......examining games....especially games that are
annotated by a strong player.....are excellent methods to improve. Don't be
so quick to rule them out if you're serious about learning the game.

Ran the ChessMaster tournament and I am rapidly gaining confidence if
not skill. Then again beating the kids in the schoolyard is not that
prideful.

I've read an article about the Giuoco Piano and decided to use that
opening as White for the time being. As for Black, I don't know yet. I
think I've read somewhere that I should try to use openings that are
similar to one another. If you like attacking as White, chose openings
that are rather attacking as Black too. Any ideas on which openings to
use best as Black against 1.d4 and 1.e4?
If it might help to pick an opening for me, I started playing chess in
a club last may and although I have no official FIDE rating yet, let's
say I'm rated about 1350-1450.

That's a good choice.

Against 1.e4, I'd stick with 1.e5 for the time being. Somebody here
(IIRC) recently advised that you shouldn't try the fancy stuff against
1.d4 (i.e., 1... Nf6, leading to the King's Indian, Gruenfeld, Nimzo-
Indian and so on) until you understand the queen's gambit declined
(QGD).

So the Italian Game as White, 1.e4 e5 as Black (can you be a bit more
specific on what to aim for next?) and the Queen's Gambit Declined as
Black when White starts 1.d4?
