Chess players haven't yet discovered good enough drugs to qualify for
the Olympics.

Dunno. Break it down:
chess1 /tʃɛs/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[ches]
Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun a game played by two persons, each with 16 pieces, on a
chessboard.

sport /spɔrt, spoʊrt/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled
Pronunciation[spawrt, spohrt] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA
Pronunciation
–noun 1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and
often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf,
bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

ath·let·ic /æθˈlɛtɪk/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled
Pronunciation[ath-let-ik] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation

-- of or pertaining to athletes; involving the use of physical skills
or capabilities, as strength, agility, or stamina: athletic sports;
athletic training.

Since chess is not an *athletic* activity, as the use of physical
skills is not a requirement for particiapation, then the clear answer
is NO.

I'm sure we'll hear arguments now about how you need stamina etc.,
etc., but that circumvents the actual definition of an athletic
activity. Chess is a cerebral activity. All you need to play is your
mind. A parapalegic can play chess, but he cannot play baseball,
hockey, football, or tennis, all athletic activities.
