The political editor of the Independent seems not to think this sociology very interesting, except that it relates to pressure to exalt it as a sport, get lottery money for it, and Kasparov's attentions to Tony Blair and questions in parliament. It's a sad day for Britain. I had thought the British were more sensible. That chess is a sport is simply absurd. The Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton, -- Ian Burton (Please reply to the Newsgroup) not on the chess boards of Simpsons-in-the-Strand. |

It's obvious that chess is not a sport. It's a parlour game. It seems to me that chess in the UK could be neither more badly served nor more badly run if we were actively trying to *prevent* its being played here. Really, we're a bunch of amateurs who have no clue. A sad day, indeed. Mark Houlsby |

Phil I hate to break it to you, Phil, but this sociology is *not* very interesting. What it *is* is depressing. We seem determined to do everything as badly as possible. |

Did you mean to write: "Is that because what's [note the apostrophe - denoting the omission of the "i" of "is"] happening to them in cricket [note the lowercase "c" - in this case, "cricket" is not a proper noun. In the case of Jimmy Cricket it is....] in Australia takes them too far from home?" Or perhaps "Is that because what's happening to them in cricket in Australia is disrupting their sleep patterns?" Do tell, I'm on tentahooks here. |

Congratulations to the UK for finally catching up to the rest of the world about chess being a sport. Now if only the United States would do the same ... The guy who said chess is "a parlor game", he obviously hasn't put as much into chess as I have, nor has he gotten as much out of it. |
