The political editor of the Independent seems not to think this sociology
very interesting, except that it relates to pressure to exalt it as a sport,
get lottery money for it, and Kasparov's attentions to Tony Blair and
questions in parliament.

It's a sad day for Britain. I had thought the British were more sensible.
That chess is a sport is simply absurd. The Battle of Waterloo was won on
the playing fields of Eton,

Well said. It's obvious that chess is not a sport. It's a parlour game.
It seems to me that chess in the UK could be neither more badly served
nor more badly run if we were actively trying to *prevent* its being
played here. Really, we're a bunch of amateurs who have no clue. A sad
day, indeed.

I hate to break it to you, Phil, but this sociology is *not* very
interesting. What it *is* is depressing. We seem determined to do
everything as badly as possible.

Your question appears to be incomplete... is that because what's
happening to them in Cricket in Australia...what?

Did you mean to write: "Is that because what's [note the apostrophe -
denoting the omission of the "i" of "is"] happening to them in cricket
[note the lowercase "c" - in this case, "cricket" is not a proper noun.
In the case of Jimmy Cricket it is....] in Australia takes them too
far from home?"

Or perhaps "Is that because what's happening to them in cricket in
Australia is disrupting their sleep patterns?"

Do tell, I'm on tentahooks here.

Duh. Search Google News for "cricket Australia". Ask and ye shall
learn. England is getting its butt kicked by Australia at some big
cricket match.

Congratulations to the UK for finally catching up to the rest of the
world about chess being a sport. Now if only the United States would
do the same ...

The guy who said chess is "a parlor game", he obviously hasn't put as
much into chess as I have, nor has he gotten as much out of it.

Chess is not a sport. A sport is an athletic competition requiring
stamina and athleticism, like Soccer or Baseball or even Cricket. Chess
is a Cerebral Activity. It does not belong in the main olympics with
Track and Field, etc.

Not to be Politically Incorrect, but if a parapalegic can play a
'sport' like chess as well as a person with all his physical facilities
(or even not as well), then, well, it's not a sport is it? It fails the
test.
