What about Garry Kasparov versus Fritz X3D? :-)

I think that was just a gimmick.

I think you just answered your own question. :-)

I didn't have Fritz at the time. The 3D thing gave me a negative
impression of Fritz, that it was just a gimmick. I thought the whole
match was contrived just to get people to buy the 3D game.

Later, though, I bought Fritz 9, and I like it. I never use 3D boards
though.

I am currently producing a 3D version of online chess, prime examples
of popular 2D chess games would be yahoo games and hotmail and also the
specific online chess sites.

I am interested in current player's opinions on the feasibility of a
3D version of these existing chess games.

If a 3D version of the game was available on the internet what would
players of the 2D games like to see included or added in order to make
it a successful alternative or improvment on existing games?

here is a link to pictures of what my final game might look like:

Personally I hate 3D computer chess. It doesn't really look 3D. You can't
get a different perspective by moving your eyes or head as you can at the
board, so what is the point of 3D effect -- that's what it really is -- on
screen? I never understood why ChessBase made such a big stink over 3D.

Your boards and pieces look so-so by the way. A bit dark and off-color, like
a Sam Sloan video.

Supposedly that was a 3D virtual reality setup that appeared much more
life-like. When he moved his head (and eyes?) the perspective changed. On a
normal screen when you move your head or eyes you see the same blessed
thing: a very distorted representation of chess pieces.

That's right, but it still seems like an unnecessary complication to
me.
