Default what do the chess playing public want?

I am currently producing a 3D version of online chess, prime examples
of popular 2D chess games would be yahoo games and hotmail and also the
specific online chess sites.

I am interested in current player's opinions on the feasibility of a
3D version of these existing chess games.

If a 3D version of the game was available on the internet what would
players of the 2D games like to see included or added in order to make
it a successful alternative or improvment on existing games?

here is a link to pictures of what my final game might look like:

I doubt whether real chess players would join a site because it has 3 D
pieces. Sorry. Nice work though...:-)

Nabisco have one. Google it. There is no fee to play, so join 'any open
game' and enter 2 initials and you're off!

When you play you are sat directly behind your pieces, and its difficult to
'see-over' them, and by mouse-grab of a piece you can pick up the wrong one,
or drop it an unintended square.

I'm not sure how to avoid this - maybe using a more isometric view?

Good modeling! But I think you still have the Nabisco problem.

Try this URL to take a look at their simpler modeling, but
viewing-all-the-pieces problem.

What would be a plus is if you could make a decent interface
for FICS that incorperates some of Blitzin (ICC) best features
and make the 3d optional.

Thanks to every one for there comments so far

It sounds like a 3D "option" might be the way forward

however in reply to poor access to pieces I have played a 3D game of
chess written in Java that allowed the user to rotate the board on a
central pivot to any required angle, this made playing the game easier
and helped to prevent picking up or moving the wrong piece, although I
am unsure as to how hard this would be to implement across two machines
as the game was played on a single machine against the computer.

Any more comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated

Like others, I think you're wasting your time. Pretty much every
consumer-oriented chess program has 3-d boards. No player I know ever
uses them.

Quite simply, you don't see the board as well in 3D. In real life, you
can compensation simply by moving your head and body slightly (to say
nothing of the fact that the stereoscopic nature of vision helps you see
'around' obstacles on the chessboard). With a board on a screen, that
doesn't work. Adding controls to move the board just makes thing more
cumbersome.

That being said, the dramatic lighting and overall darkness of your
board is a HUGE negative. Look at your fourth image: you simply not
instantly distinguish the various pieces. Sure, I can figure it out if I
stare - but I don't want to have to stare.

If I have to work to figure out what piece is where, that's a huge
problem - an instant deal-killer. It's 100% unacceptable. The shadows
look cool but they interfere with proper game play.

Default 3D Boards very difficult to see.

It is very difficult to play on 3d board. I remember once I downloaded
a Chess game Demo version with 3D interface.

To make a move I had to think for 20 seconds which piece should be
moved.

It is better to have a 2D board just like:
http://www.GetClub.com/Chess.html

I do not think 3D is needed for playing Chess. Giving it as an Option
for Novice plays will be OK.
