Witness the following, posted a year ago:

"What do you think of mostly men who say that they would object to the
book becoming part of a high school studies course, not because of the
history between the covers, but because of the word "Bitch" in the
title."

Mark, do you know what a "mostly men" is? I don't.

Neither do I, but something tells me I'd prefer not to meet one, in a
dark alley, late
at night....

I say we send all those mostly men back to mostly where they came from!

Prediction: Phil will now claim that "Yurpians" all write as he
does and that it is the "Murkins" who are ignorant for not knowing
that.

BEST JOKE OF THE YEAR

Of course, you did make the best self-deprecating joke of the year! You
declared 'Old English is dead', which is one of the funniest things I
EVER
read, and it must have taken you some time and considerable knowledge to
'refute' the idea by using 4 Old English words!

...surely you mean: "... Olde Englishe words!".

I am sorry, no. It would be Englisc wordes if you wanted to try West Saxon.
The word 'old' seem to stem from Mercian, and an A. Sax incorporation from
the Norse of the Danelaw via the north of England, and it is not likely that
'Old English' are terms that will be found together, certainly not until as
late as the A. Sax Chronicles, and then in writing, since as ani ful no,
Saxon was hardly homogenous on the Island as any single tongue, and even 50
miles could obviate common understanding of speche

This is what stimulated Edward to his great educational project, no? And,
indeed, why he, and only he of monarchs, is called the Great.

ha ha ha! What do you call this verbal device? In your honor I named it
Brennunization, and I suggest you spare us any false modesty, since you
are
so profoundly good at it.

As distinct from constructing a sentence properly? But what is a trope,
among we hyper-criticals?

You always exhibit difficulty in constructing one which can be
understood by those of us who don't inhabit Planet Innes....

So you have failed to understand the issue because of compounded syntax, and
sentences containing several phrases, which for you is some other planet,
and also fail to understand much simpler issues such as 'mostly men',
presumably some liking for 'men, mostly', as an alternate unsplit pair, you
also have some difficulty with simple 7 and 9 word sentences in the Quiz
about which you exclaim, and even singular words, so that you ask for
definitions of what is:-

'first'
'match'

and also

'first match'

Which cannot recommend your judgement, large or small, and if it were not
for your fantastic resolutions about other people, could be let lie.

Instead it is worth pointing out that neither large nor small attention
attends you - since you are happy to conclude with another who also can
comprehend all 9 simple words of this latest 'question' about a question
without having an hysterical breakdown in public.

No, Old English. If I wanted to try West Saxon, or indeed a

No, he wanted money.

"...a hysterical breakdown," The letter "h" is a consonant. Anyone who
actually says "A nisterical breakdown" brings new meaning to the

Yes, it's one of the more amusing of Philsy's many, many idiocies. He
can't understand that a langauge is not the same as its stock of words,
or lexicon.

Stop your defamations Brennan. What you know on any subject is a complete
mystery, even after 5 years of posting.

So he believes that Neil Armstong spoke Old English on the
moon, and Winston Churchill spoke Anglo Saxon in his wartime
broadcasts.

O - but so do rather formidable linguists, and even the redoutable historian
Schama.

Even ordinary linguists know it. Only you and Marky-poo don't - that's why
you are stupid enough to write Old English Is Dead, which is all 'Old
English'. Not that either of you actually know anything about what you post,
or have a genuine interest in it, in fact you only exclaim over what you
don't understand like a couple of frightened virgins.

But at least Brennun makes himself famous for this invention of the
self-defeating sentence. 'Putting the fat back into fatuous'.

My favorite moment in that thread was when the Nearly an IM 2450
claimed to have inside knowledge of 'greats':

And here we have the continuation of ratings envy! If you can do, you don't
need to exclaim over it!

Now that you have lost 100 lbs, maybe try living your own life, and get off
your fat arse to do so. Otherwise you will be forced to live your life out
vicariously through other people, which is indeed a miserable way to go.

The watery 'explanation' below is not worth a straw. If Brennan had anything
to say on any topic that wasn't nazi-boy stuff, surely he would say it?

If he liked chess, surely he would comment on it?

The same goes to his new friend Mark. Otherwise, I suppose, they will
continue to display their complete ignorance, while finding everything else
ripe for lowering to their own standard.

What a vile duo!

Phil

After he looks this up, he might want to examine
the entries on "loanword", "borrowing", and, if he really wants his
heart broken, "Old English" and "History of English." The last states
..."within a century of the Norman Conquest of 1066 [Old English] was
dead."

I wonder then how it is explained that the 100 most used of our words
are A.

and
William Shakespeare, Prof.s Tolkien and Lewis, all of whom utilised
that

I can't speak for Neil, of course, but I swore an oath on my old
white-haired Granny's knee never to play email chess if anything at all
was at stake. You could try, once again, to recruit me by emailing me,
but, if you do, I shall ignore it. If you so entreat me in the NG, I
shall ignore that, too.

BTW, if you weren't so bad for Phil, and so basically dishonest, then I
might consider breaking the oath, but you are, and you are, so I shall
not.

I've played by email. I respect chess too much to play with Innes or

Notice how this chess 'tournament' materialized as soon as Innes had
his head handed to him in discussions here? Can you say "drawing
attention from?"

Also note Robtroll has adopted the usual Innes subtexts that chess
ability = thinking ability, and that a person can call themselves
"nearly an IM, with a rating of 2450" based on casual play in
coffeehouses.

Mark,
nothing is at stake.

I've played by email. I respect chess too much to play with Innes or

Neil,
That was very clever. But you don't have to play either of us if you
don't wish to do so. But there are several people who I think you might
like to play chess against who have signed up.

You could try, once again, to recruit me by emailing me,
but, if you do, I shall ignore it. If you so entreat me in the NG, I
shall ignore that, too.

Mark,
You know how to sign up. If you want to play chess with your peers with
who you enjoy discussing the game of chess with, then you may do so. If
you don't want to play chess with them, then that too is your choice.

BTW, if you weren't so bad for Phil, and so basically dishonest, then I
might consider breaking the oath, but you are, and you are, so I shall
not.

Mark,
That is your opinion. I am sorry you feel that way. I do respect your
opinion and your feelings. I believe them to be wrong and I know them
to be wrong in regards to me.

Notice how this chess 'tournament' materialized as soon as Innes had
his head handed to him in discussions here? Can you say "drawing
attention from?"

Neil,
I have been planning this since before the holidays. There is simply no
time anyone can post anything that you wouldn't have made that claim as
you never stop attacking anyone.

Also note Robtroll has adopted the usual Innes subtexts that chess
ability = thinking ability, and that a person can call themselves
"nearly an IM, with a rating of 2450" based on casual play in
coffeehouses.

Neil,
That is untrue .I said nothing about "thinking ability = chess
ability". There are those who have questioned others ability at playing
chess and I simply pointed out that this would prove to be an opportune
moment to settle that question. There are quite a few people who I am
sure qould qualify as "chess idiots". They know everything about chess
and nothing about the rest of the world. There are also people who have
a genius IQ who cannot play a decent game of chess.

You have an opportunity to play or not to play. I will respect any
decision you make. If you continue to labor this point about "ratings"
implying that the talent to compete at that level does not exist, then
I would think you may want to prove your theory.( or at least watch to
see the results)

So, in replying to you both in one post I hope we have some sense of
porportion to the venom in this group. There is non on my part and I
sincerely would like everyone to get along. Mark has conceded that Tom
Klem was quite nice over the chess board. I have to think that most of
us would get along better if we shared something, a game or two of
chess.
