A very important point.
On January 8, 2007, Jerry Hanken, who regularly writes for Chess Life,
announced on the USCF website that the USCF had made a deal with
Merrill Lynch to sponsor the US Championship.
In fact, no such deal had been made nor was the USCF engaged in any
negotiations with Merrill, Lynch.
A few days later, word came that the actual proposed sponsor with whom
the USCF had been negotiating was pulling out and would not be
sponsoring the 2007 US Championship.
It seems likely that these two events were related.
