Is Sigma Hiarcs currently the best chess software for Mac? How do you
compare it to Fritz?

Thank you,

Ponty

The Sigma interface sucks.

Hiarcs is a good, strong engine. I'm not familiar enough with it to talk
intelligently about how it compares to Fritz, but it's a good engine.

But, like I said, the Sigmachess program itself blows.

(I've found Gambit to be much more useful, but I think it only uses the
Crafty engine, which is not a particularly strong engine as engines go).

I think there's a demo version, so you can try it out for yourself.

But it basically doesn't handle variations, making it useless for
analysis.

How do other programs handle variations? Again, could you elaborate a
little?

Fritz, for example, will allow you to store a complete game plus
variations all at once. As you move through the game, you have the
option of either entering a variation or continuing with the main
line. When you enter a variation, you don't lose the main line, but
can go back to it, later.
