I seem to think there is an Austrian Attack, but I am not sure, so I left it out. The Austrian Attack is a line of the Pirc Defense, distinguished by 4.f4 after 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6. There is also an Austrian Defense, 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c5. I did not want to get into cities as there are too many: Vienna Opening, Budapest Defense, Belgrade Gambit, Cambridge Springs Variation. I did not want to get into cities as there are too many: Vienna Opening, Budapest Defense, Belgrade Gambit, Cambridge Springs Variation. Then there is the Yugoslav, and the Yugoslow and the ColeSlaw [which is like the Slav but with more chances to get it on shirt] A region is named, Scandinavian Defense. And Russians call the Petrov, Russian Defence, or colloquially, the Smirnoff. In USA you already got Cambridge Springs, but there is also a Wilkes-Barre Var, plus something out West? Lots of cities have variation names, ie, Berlin, London... Then there is the English, and confusing to Americans, also the English Defence, which is a wall-like structure erected by Black, not unlike Hadrian's effort to keep the Scots [White] out, or to keep em in, with peepholes in it for the Bishops to peer out. This defence is dealt with same way historic wall was, sail around, and get at King's camp directly, raise a little hell in other's camp on way, loot&hot foot it oot! since defence system is not v. mobile. Again as with history, if counter-attack can be thwarted, all will be well ![]() And the arrgh Scotch. I think Garry K and Alex Khalifman settled that the Bb4-Ba5 retreat in the French should be called the Aremenian variation, in honor of those players who most developed it - [is this the most recent place-name for an opening?] And last of all, the Sicilian! First, load your lupo... Phil Innes Sam Sloan |
