My point, exactly. Right, but if you're looking for a reason to chide Sam for cross- posting, it would be easy to find a thousand examples better than this one. This announcement actually caught my eye because I remember Joe Tamargofrom occasional visits to the Flea House in the 60s. I last saw him about 25 years ago and I was happy to hear that he's still with us and writing. I'll probably order the book if and when it shows up on Amazon. I could use a Spanish refresher course, though not necessarily the kind that will get me thrown out of bars... LT The book is available right now on Amazon, today:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/092389179X The book is really excellent.Tamargois an old friend and I promised to publish it two years ago before he wrote it, as a favor not thinking much would come of it, but it turns out that the book is really great, possibly the best book of its kind ever written. Sam Sloan- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - When I ordered this book from Amazon, I didn't have particularly high expectations. But now that I have it, I'm enjoying it immensely. It's like getting several informal Spanish lessons from an urbane and witty dinner companion. Sam, please pass my compliments on to Joe. He and I had a couple of brief conversations in the Game Room around 1980, but unless he has a Brandwein-like memory, he probably wouldn't remember me. Larry T. |

I seem to recall a post to that effect by Sam. |

I seem to recall a post to that effect by Sam. Right. In August 2004 Tamargo was hospitalized and his left leg was amputated. He has been in a nursing home ever since. Being in a nursing home is what gave him time to work on his book. In August 2004, I wrote on this group, "The book is just about ready for publication, but has not been published yet". As it turned out, Tamargo drove me crazy by making endless corrections and changes, so the book did not come out for another three years. Now, Tamargo wants me to pull the book back from the printer to make some more extremely minor, trivial changes. He wants a smaller font on page 3. I have refused. Three years is enough. It is time for him to start another project. The result, however, is a really great book and a great contribution to the language and to those who study it. Sam Sloan |

You would be doing Joe a tremendous favor if you would post your review of his book on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/092389179X Reviews are tremendously important, I have found from experience. A good review can make a book a great success and one bad review can destroy a book. Sam Sloan |
