I am not really a co-worker with his wife. But share a similar philosophy of
what forwards us, and what hinders us - and have done /some/ projects with
his wife, not so many really.

As for him, while the language in the offensive posts is intended to get
your goat - and did!- I recently told him that his English sucked!

He was gracious enough to laugh at the comment - but really, both he and she
commit on a regular basis un-americanisms - the very usual second-language
tropes and mixed high and low cant expressions, rather wooden adjectival
repetitions, confounded adverbs, and so on - both in speech and in writing,
while talking quietly and also with enthusiasm.

These things can be faked for sure, but over long periods of time,
especially under stressful circumstances, I rather doubt it is possible to
such an extent.

What the author "FSS" does is commit to a language which /is/
quintessentially of native-born American expression, without error or gaff
and in some 2,400 instances!

But this is but a detail, a minor one, if ever so exciting to specualte
upon. Below the surface, here is a deeper context:-

About 20 months ago Larry Parr counselled Sam Sloan here in these newsgroups
on his likely reception to the USCF board, and offered the caveats that he
should guard against personality intrigues which would negate the
prospective worth of what he could do during his term. It was very good
advice, and in fact percipient of events. That the advise was completely
ignored is no matter at all to my context.

What is very interesting about the current state of affairs is that the very
same situation has come about, utilizing this time, the ex cathedra factor
of suppositional identities to negate not one, but two elements on the board
who pose a similar threat to business as usual, as Sloan himself had -
though in fundamentally differing forms!

That is the 'political' context of this issue. As to the Crime, I suggested
here that we had not quite identified the primary victim - and indeed, while
matters are pending the right venue for expression, I can certainly say we
half not heard the half of it yet.

I used to write with all sorts of people in Petersburg, with Khalifman to
make some NY arrangements for him in the Open before he was W Ch, and then
Taimanov and Svidler &c, plus some organisers.

In terms of chess in Russia, Petersburg is proud to be a somewhat insulated
island from the rest.

who is now #2 in government in the Dumas, behind pres. Putin. The most

entire spectrum of chess events, but relates to other burocrats elsewhere,
on their own introverted concerns about their own status.

Not even Joel Lautier [with whom I also wrote a lot] as head of ACP could
get through to this class of person, and he, in effect, represented a vast
concensus of GM opinion. Recently writing with Nigel Short in England on
behalf of commonwealth chess would seem to further support all these views
of Fide's inertness. That is something of an understatement in Nigel's case]

But Joel is a /very/ conservative person, and in no sense radical. You see
the problem? It is not you - if these Greats in chess achieve
nothing-to-little over a long time... heuch!

I am not really sure about the references to Slavers - and as you see from
my lengthy reponse self snipped on both PT and the FSS, plus 'Russian'
views by Russians themselves, many things are other than they appear.

I must reserve judgement, since I don't really understand much about IOC
activity beyond their current orientation to 'real' sports, rather than
games.

To be on topic - some other writers here have begun to speculate on
drug-use, even trans-gender 'issues' [a current euphemism], and take the
current, and nicely innocent activity of playing chess, and fold it in these
strange wrappers of ex cathedra context, which perhaps unwittingly confounds
the core issues - which are /not/ addressed, and these a-

a) The game does not suffer from drug use

b) Top players do not complain that others gain unfair advantage by taking
drugs

c) Relating the innocent activity of chess playing with sports&drugs culture
does not enhance chess, it achieves the opposite in two respects
- psychologically it suggests there is some drug which needs
suppressing,
- but the major denigration is political and burocratic, which want to
expand their fungus like grip on an otherwise healthy game by adding more
and more layers of nonsense over it, which has already included changing the
rules of the game.

LIKE-CHESS, ANYONE?

Any more of that and we will no longer play the same game as did Capa,
Alekhine and Fischer. And their motive to do whatever it takes to exercise a
little bit of control of others is very strongly established.

This lust for quite unnecessary money is an appetitite which is not sated by
being fed. In fact, the administration of chess, at home and abroad actually
keeping regular commercial sponsorships at bay, is not exactly a secret.

For these reasons I do not encourage yet another level of insensible
management layered over a dysfunction national federation, which is already
at odds with a world federation, by yet another stratum of completely
inconsequential management activity by IOC which...
