Latex gloves anyone? ![]() I hope Carlsen doesn't catch the cold for the next round. Mig at The Daily Dirt Chess Blog states, "Gelfand finally got a win by beating his occasional second, the ailing Eljanov." It sounds like a communicable disease was running around Corus. Eljianov and Kramnik... I wonder who else. I checked at the discount store the other day. A 100 count box of sterile latex gloves cost about $4.40 USD. The vinyl ones are even cheaper at 100 ct for $2.99 USD. The breathing filters are also very cheap. Maybe Kramnik would have won the tournament if he had defended against the Corus bug. He was looking very strong earlier in the tournament. -- Cordially, Rev. J.D. Walker, MsD, U.C. |

Often viruses will travel via droplets of liquid. For example when someone sneezes or coughs, a cloud of such droplets may form in the air. A breathing filter is a great help in such circumstances. Go ahead and wear a gas mask if it makes you feel safer, I won't complain. -- Cordially, Rev. J.D. Walker, MsD, U.C. |

To follow up, check out this article from the CDC: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/EID/vol12no11/06-0426.htm Here is the abstract of the article, "Abstract In theory, influenza viruses can be transmitted through aerosols, large droplets, or direct contact with secretions (or fomites). These 3 modes are not mutually exclusive. Published findings that support the occurrence of aerosol transmission were reviewed to assess the importance of this mode of transmission. Published evidence indicates that aerosol transmission of influenza can be an important mode of transmission, which has obvious implications for pandemic influenza planning and in particular for recommendations about the use of N95 respirators as part of personal protective equipment." Thanks for raising the question Dave. I had not explored the various types of breathing filtration. The CDC is recommending a particular type of filter to combat pandemic conditions. "So what is a N95 surgical respirator?" Here is an article at the FDA that describes them. http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/ppe/masksrespirators.html "About surgical masks and surgical N95 respirators Surgical masks and surgical N95 respirators are disposable devices that cover the mouth and nose during medical procedures. They help protect the caregiver and patient against microorganisms, body fluids, and small particles in the air. Surgical masks and surgical N95 respirators are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). FDA evaluates the performance of these devices in areas including fluid resistance and filtration efficiency to ensure that they are at least as safe and effective as similar devices already on the market. FDA encourages manufacturers to follow specific performance standards for their masks, and FDA also requires that these products be produced using good manufacturing practices. Respirators may also be certified by NIOSH (the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) in accordance with regulations in 42 CFR part 84. When a mask is both cleared by FDA as a surgical mask and certified by NIOSH as an N95 respirator mask, FDA calls it a "surgical N95 respirator." " On my next trip to the old discount store I will check into the details on N95 Surgical Respirator prices. -- Cordially, Rev. J.D. Walker, MsD, U.C. |
