... Are there any chess books that talk about computer vs computer dynamics? Could simply be how to create a computer chess program, stories about the authors of computer chess programs, or an enthusiast observer waxing poetic. Any such book suggestions would be greatly appreciated. There are quite a few books about computer chess. In the 80s, David Welsh wrote two very good books on computer chess. These mostly focused on computer vs. computer. The second book was a lot thicker than the first, with lots of computer vs. computer games annotated. "Chess Skill in Man and Machine" by Peter Frey. Old, but a classic. "Computer Chess" by Monroe (Monty) Newborn. "How Computers play chess" by Levy & Newbron. "The joy of computer chess" by David Levy. Thin, not a lot there, but if you can find it cheap... All of those are old, being from the 80s. But they can still be fun to read. "Behind Deep Blue" by Hsu is a fascinating story of behind the scenes of Deep Blue's creation. Just go over to Amazon.com and enter "Computer Chess" in the books section and see what turns up. |

Another one is:
"Computers, Chess and Cognition" by Schaeffer & Marsland It's got some papers about Deep Thought, HiTech, CrayBlitz, along with some general articles on computer chess. "Guest" wrote in message ... ... Another good one from that period is David Levy's Computer Chess Compendium which is decently thick and meaty and includes important papers desribing the chess programs by Shannon, Greenblat, upto Chess 4.5 and Cray Blitz. There is an extensive list of references too. I didn't know any details about that one. A lot of Levy's computer chess books are pretty easy stuff, with not a lot of meat in them. This one sounds different. I already have papers on Chess 4.5 (plus the source for v4.6), CrayBlitz (plus the source for it), and so on. But I do like books on old computer chess programs... I guess I'm going to have to hunt up a description of the contents to see if it's worth the Amazon price. Thanks Martin. |
