Universal and Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner have
tapped Kevin Macdonald to direct "Bobby Fischer Goes to War." The drama about the upstart chess whiz's triumph over Boris Spassky in the World Chess Championship in 1972 is scripted by Shawn Slovo, based on the book by David Edmonds and John Eidinow..... And how much history will be rewritten for the sake of drama? |

ITS NOT A DONE DEAL UNTIL IT'S DONE
Books are optioned for films all the time, and the films are never made. For example, Peter Falk optioned the rights to BOBBY FISCHER VS. THE REST OF THE WORLD by Brad Darrach. Milos Forman was slated to direct. In his autobiography, Forman said that he wanted Fischer and Spassky to play themselves. At the time Forman was filming the musical "HAIR" and describes his meetings with Bobby -- which convinced him not to make the film. David Richerby wrote: Taylor Kingston wrote: Very interesting. The most temperamental diva would have been putty by comparison. He would have been like Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) in the early scenes of "Tootsie," only much more so. At least they won't have that problem if this one goes to production. |

John Turturro would be a natural as Fischer. Of course, getting typecast as a tortured chess genius might be a career risk... |

A few off-the-top-of-my-head suggestions: Fischer -- Nicholas Cage Spassky -- Johnny Depp, Kiefer Sutherland, or Stellan Skarsgård Max Euwe -- Frank Langella Ed Edmonson -- Jack Nicholson Nikolai Krogius -- Danny DeVito Leonid Brezhnev -- Joss Ackland |

Just a couple years ago with a potential match situation, he wanted to know the parentage and grand-parentage of the film crew, in case they were J**s. That is when I told Saemi P, I about had enough. Phil Innes The most temperamental diva would have been putty by comparison. I was thinking it would be a nice touch to cast Jeroen Krabbe as Euwe. Tim Krabbe, the novelist and collector of chess curiosities, is his brother. And Jeroen is after all a tall Dutchman with a certain gravitas. In the Fischer role, I'd like to see Christopher Walken playing it for laughs. Just a thought... LT |
