They did let Botvinnik more or less stop playing while
he got his PhD, but it was clear he wasn't giving the
game up forever. And his PhD allowed them to keep
up the myth that their players were not professionals.

On the other hand they would not let Levenfish quit in
the late 1930s, even though he was getting on in
years and was still productive as a scientist.

Without a shred of an academic or other excuse, Fischerov would have
had to keep playing.

Didn't Fischer before the Palma De Mallorca tournament want to quit
chess, but he pondered the question "What else can I do?" And he knew
the answer was nothing.
