On a typical passing play, the quarterback takes the snap, either
directly under center, or in shotgun formation, and retreats a few
steps. The linemen -- large, bulky, powerful men -- form a semi-
circular pocket around him, fending off defensive players and keeping
them from tackling the quarterback. The eligible receivers -- usually
smaller, faster men -- run downfield varying distances in patterns
designed to elude defensive backs. The quarterback surveys the field,
looking for open receivers. Finding one, he throws the ball overhand,
his fingers on the laces imparting a spin to the ball that makes it
rotate in a tight spiral, which increases its stability in flight and
thus the accuracy of the throw. He usually attempts to throw the ball
in such a way that the receiver can catch it on the run and thus
maximize his yardage after the catch.

That is how you pass. Other forms of passing involve automobiles,
scholastic achievement, or the consumption of beans.
