Does anyone here have the actual tournament book of Baden-Baden
1925? If so, could you please tell me what it gives for moves 16-22 of the Reti-Alekhine game, and any comments it may have on whether threefold repetition actually occurred or not? I am curious, because while some sources have deleted any repetitious moves, others show threefold repetition occurring not just once, but up to three times within that series of moves, yet neither player claimed the draw. |

After 19...Bg4 it says:
Hier reklamierte Schwarz zu Unrecht Remis wegen dreimaliger Stellungswiederholung. Diese Reklamation wurde abgewiesen. |

There is a multiple repetition of position in the following game but
neither player claims. It just helps keep off time trouble. [Event "Rotterdam WCup ;CBM 13"] [Site "Rotterdam WCup ;CBM 13"] [Date "1989.??.??"] [EventDate "?"] [Round "?"] [Result "1/2-1/2"] [White "John Van der Wiel"] [Black "Anatoli Karpov"] [ECO "C92"] [WhiteElo "?"] [BlackElo "?"] [PlyCount "55"] 1. e4 e5 2. Is the book saying that Alekhine (Black) made an incorrect claim of three-fold repetition at move 19? I recall reading years ago somewhere that he had done so as a psychological ploy, to annoy Reti into *_not_* actually repeating the position for the third time. Yet, if my source (Skinner & Verhoeven) is correct, repetition actually occurred several times after that: 1. g3 e5 2. Nf3 e4 3. Nd4 d5 4. d3 exd3 5.Qxd3 Nf6 6. Bg2 Bb4+ 7. Bd2 Bxd2+ 8. Nxd2 O-O 9. c4 Na6 10. cxd5 Nb4 11. Qc4 Nbxd5 12. N2b3 c6 13. O-O Re8 14. Rfd1 Bg4 15. Rd2 Qc8 16. Nc5 -- Beginning the first iteration of the repeated positions. -- 16...Bh3 17. Bf3 Bg4 18. Bg2 Bh3 19. Bf3 Bg4 20. Bg2 -- Repeating the position after White's 16th and 18th moves. -- 20...Bh3 -- Repeating the position after Black's 16th and 18th moves. 21. Bf3 -- Repeating the position after White's 17th and 19th moves. -- 21...Bg4 -- Repeating the position after Black's 17th and 19th moves. 22. Bh1 -- Finally breaking out of the repetitions. Does the tournament book give these same moves? If so, does it say anything further about why neither player claimed a draw when he might have? I mean, if Reti was agreeable to a draw, one would think he would have agreed to one at move 19. If he wanted to avoid a draw, then why would he allow extra repetitions, any one of which would allow Alekhine to claim a draw? |
