"Spassky, showing his usual classiness..."

Shirt with the ruffles, shoes with the tassels.
"You two on honeymoon? They said it wouldn't last!"

Actually I just realised that Spassky is a Russian Orthodox Catholic
and Fischer was buried in a Catholic cemetery. It's another unusual
way their lives have converged.

It's tough to mention one without thinking about the other.

Spassky doesn't get quite the attention he deserves, aside from being
the guy that lost to Fischer in the greatest match/story ever.

I may start posting more about him on my blog in the near future.

Maybe I'm not familiar with all the denominational subtleties
involved, but aren't Russian Orthodox and Catholic mutually exclusive?

I believe that Russian, Greek, Syrian Jacobite, Queen's Gambit and
various other Orthodox churches listen seriously to what the Vatican
pope has to say but in no way have to follow it.

Yup, since the Great Schism of 1054.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts,
With stoutest wrists and loudest boasts,
He thrusts his fists against the posts
And still insists he sees the ghosts.
