I've seen the first 3 now. * I can't believe they are going to wind it
up in 7.

IMO-
They spent too little time on how his early life & how he ended up a
politician.
Too little time introducing characters- especially cousin Sam.

Much of the dialogue is right out of his diary and letters back and
forth from Abigail. * But they never show him writing them! *And the
only reference to Abigail writing him was in the first episode where
they showed her asking Washington to carry her letters. [and then they
left out the part about the intercepted letters that caused Adams some
embarrassment]

HBO has once again made an excellent show.
HBO *and SHO make these types of show much better than "hollywood" or the
regular networks do.

What's there is good. *But since McCullough did the research already-
they could certainly have done 20 episodes without breaking a sweat. I
hope their ratings are good & they decide to do some more founders-
maybe a little deeper.

I still haven't read McCullough's book. I read Ellis's "Passionate
Sage" just before the McCullough book came out & now my son has it.
Too many books- too little time.

Jim

This new PBS series has prompted PBS to release on DVD their mini
series from 1976, " The Adams Chronicles". If you have never seen it ,
it was a wonderful series.

That's right - they skipped Harvard entirely - and that would have been an
interesting anthropological record. I suppose Hanks had to edit the author's
entry's on this subject, and that is something to do with the nature of tv
and mass audiences.

Yes - to go beyond McC, there is a collection, Copyright 2007, Massachusetts
Historical Society, publ Belnap Press, Harvard U, of their letters
together - titled "My Dearest Friend."

Here is a little extract of her candour, her wit and very appreciable
intelligence, dated Ap. 14, 1776:-

As to Declarations of Independency, be patient. Read our Privateering
Laws, and our Commercial Laws. What signifies a Word.

As to your extraordinary Code of Laws, I cannot but laugh. We have been
told that our Struggle has loosened the bands of Government every Where.
That Children and Apprentices were disobedient - that schools and Colledges
were grown turbulent - that Indians Slighted their Guardians and Negroes
grew insolent to their Masters. But your letter was the first Intimation
that another Tribe more numerous and powerfull than all the rest were grown
discontented. This is rather too coarse a Compliment but you are so saucy, I
wont blot it out.
Depenjd on it, We know better than to repeal our Masculine systems.
Altho they are in Full Force, you know they are little more than Theory. We
dare not exert our Power in its full Latitude. We are obliged to go fair,
and softly, and in Practice you know We are the subjects.

Cordially, Phil Innes

It was the first program my father and I really sat down and watched
together. It was, I thought, a brilliant program. I have been hoping
it would be released soo. I have been searching for it for years on
DVD or VHS.
