I'm currently attempting to study some classic opening, middle, and
end-games as described and depicted in some books I have been reading. What I would like to be able to do is setup a game as I see in a book or article, assume one of the players -- Black or White -- make a move, and then have the computer assume the role of the other player. All the chess programs I have found that are common that come with major OSes are your basic "token" programs with few options other than changing the chess board from marble to wood or whatever. Who cares? I need a program where I can set up pieces, even fashion my own game scenarios, and have the computer play me from that point on... Does anyone know of such a program? I'd prefer to not have to purchase it, but maybe that's what it's going to take. I can run any major OS -- Windows XP/Vista, Linux or Mac OS X. I don't really care what the platform is and in fact, I don't even care about animation -- character-based is even fine (and would match some older books I've found that write pieces out as "R" = "Rook", "N" = Knight per accepted notation). Any leads or recommendations would be massively appreciated. I could have sworn I had seen something like this years and years ago, but what I saw probably doesn't exist anymore. But surely something has taken it's place. Thanks! /usr/ceo |

Thanks! /usr/ceo try Winboard and go to GNU chess. When you do that go to menu and choose Edit game Type moves in and then go to 2 Machines that will analyse your chosen position Your John |

Gnuchess will beat you easily unless you're a strong player or start in a convincingly won position. People will probably be able to give recommendations for weaker engines. If you want a stronger engine (Gnuchess not hurting you hard enough? ;-) ) try Fruit or something like that.
