Peter Svidler likes cricket.

I find that most extraordinarily unlikely.

On the contrary, as I recall, GM Nigel Short mentioned that GM Peter Svidler
had become interesting in collecting a complete set of the issues of
'Wisden' (the famous cricket journal).

"This was the charter of the land,
And guardian angels sang this strain--
'Rule, Britannia! Britannia rule the waves;
Britons never, never, never will be Slavs.'" :-)

It's slaves Nick, 'slaves', 'tho wiv the recent immigration...oh! never
mind..

'All we say, all we do, all we wish for, is a jest.'
--Samuel Richardson (Clarissa)

I have heard the song, 'Rule Britannia', so I knew that the normal last word
in that cited passage is 'slaves', not 'Slavs'. I was just making a joke about
Alan O'Brien's comment that he found it 'most extraordinarily unlikely' that
GM Peter Svidler, a Slav, could be interested in cricket.

"There's nothing upon earth I hate like a joke, unless it's against another
person."

As usual, I'm on ICC "fingering" the higher-ups
during their blitz games, and I found Ivanchuk!
That may be old news to you folks. Are there
any other top 10 players over there?
Tom

For instance Radjabov is "ubiyca".

Wlod

No. Radjabov's handle is: "velimirovich".

"ubiyca" is Ivanchuk, as I think has been pointed out elsewhere in this
thread...

No, you are wrong.
Radjabov is both 'ubiyca' and 'velimirovich' on ICC.

Thanks for putting me right.

Are you the Alan O'Brien who belonged to Athenĉum Chess Club
about twenty years ago?

I did indeed play for the Athenĉum Chess Club in the early eighties,
under the ĉgis of Steve Walsh.
I'm afraid I can't remember a Billy Chapman IF THAT IS YOUR REAL NAME!!
Alan

'Billy Chapman' might not necessarily be a 'chapman billy'. :-)

The early 1980s at Athen=E6um? let me cobble together from=20
memory a few names from that time, a bogus one, and some=20
commentary:

Bob Wade=09=09Bob has more sense than me.

Steve Walsh=09=09Obviously not me.

Jonathan Souter=09An ancient, trusty, thirsty crony of=20
=09mine.

Gavin Crawley=09=09Gavin played in the British a couple=20
=09of years ago, his performance confirmed he hadn't=20
=09lost much playing strength despite the lack of=20
=09practise, but he's more into Backgammon in recent=20
=09years.

Keith Richardson=09When I spoke to Keith at the 4NCL a=20
=09few months ago he confirmed he had given up=20
=09correspondence chess because of the widespread use=20
=09of computers, cheating really.

Martin Barkwill=09He's lost his hair; I've still got=20
=09mine, and in its original colour, more or less.

Alan O'Brien=09=09You had ginger hair then, blue eyes=20
=09(bit vague on that one), and you were a tad bigger=20
=09than me. For some reason I can't remember your=20
=09accent, mine's a London one.

Hillary Thomas=09Hillary lives in Thailand.

Ah well that's enough commentary, here are some more=20
names from then:

John Crampton, Louis de Lupis, Simon Spivack, Chris Lamb,=20
Robin Atkins, David Mander, John Beaumont, Clive=20
Wismayer, Richard Wright, Sandys Dickinson, George=20
Szaszvari, Mick Stanners, Costas Georgopoulos, John=20
Walton, Mike Rose, James Fisher, Leonidas Vrondissis, ...

Any more and I'll have to look them up.

Who am I? Barkers was willing to take over the Middlesex=20
League team, while I took over the London League team for=20
the second time. You should have stayed.

Which name is bogus?

Regards,

?

Ah Tam! Ah Tam! thou'll get thy fairin!
In hell they'll roast thee like a herrin!
In vain thy Kate awaits thy comin!
Kate soon will be a woefu' woman!
Now, do thy speedy upmost, Meg,
And win the key-stane of the brig;
There, at them thou thy tail may toss,
A running stream they dare na cross!
But ere the key-stane she could make,
The fient a tail she had to shake;
For Nannie, far before the rest,
Hard upon noble Maggie prest,
And flew at Tam wi' furious ettle,
But little wist she Maggie's mettle!
Ae spring brought off her master hale,
But left behind her ain grey tail:
The carlin claught her by the rump,
And left poor Maggie scarce a stump.

Now, wha this tale o' truth shall read,
Ilk man, and mother's son, take heed:
Whene'er to drink you are inclin'd,
Or cutty sarks run in your mind,
Think! ye may buy the joys o'er dear:
Remember Tam O'Shanter's meare.
