Beating Bisguire 13 times in a row (with no draws in between) is pretty impressive as well! |

I think his greatest accomplishment is to become world champion.
But I think the 11-0 victory in the US championships is a fine record that will stand for a loooooong time and whatever happens he will always be the first to do it. As for games, I like his win against Tal (my favourite player) in Bled in 1961 I like his sneaky mate against Miagmasuren in 1967 which his opponent didn't see until it was too late, the quiet Bg2 sets the whole thing up. See Bobby Fischers outrageous moves by Bruce Pandolfini for more details. I also like the game of the century against Byrne. One description of the game said "Byrne took the queen and went on to become on of the games immortal losers" which is a nice, backhanded tribute. No one would refuse to be on the losing end of a fischer brilliancy! "Dr. Robert Faurisson" wrote in message . ca... Fissure's greatest accomplishment? Saving us all from the hype and hoopla that would undoubtedly surround a child raised by a raving lunatic with unrealistic expectations of success in a largely unpopular sport. In short: Not reproducing. Mr. Nemmers, You might be disappointed to discover that Bobby Fischer has not accomplished what you believe. According to Rene Chun in the article, "Bobby Fischer's Pathetic Endgame" ("The Atlantic Monthly", December 2002): "For one thing, he has a girlfriend--Justine, a twenty-two-year-old Chinese-Filipina living in Manila, who couldn't care less about chess and has no intention of writing a tell-all memoir. And Fischer is now a parent: Justine gave birth to a baby girl in 2000." On the other hand, you might feel better by knowing that Fischer's daughter is being brought up essentially only by her mother (who's evidently not a "raving lunatic"), so the daughter seems on the way to experiencing a comparatively "normal childhood". "Fischer is a far cry from being a doting papa. According to one source, he 'regularly sends money to his girlfriend and child' but visits them only 'once every two months'." --Rene Chun (from "Bobby Fischer's Pathetic Endgame") Whether or not his daughter should be better off if Bobby Fischer were to take a greater interest in her life is not for an outsider like me to say. --Nick |

Beating Petrosian 3-1 in USSR vs The Rest Of The World match...Going 12-0 vs
Taimanov and Larsen..Becoming a GM at such a young age(back in the day there was only a handful of Grandmasters and no Chessbase)We should also mention "My 60 Memorable Games" as a great achievement |

I did not know that. Shows how much I keep up on the latest news regarding the former world chess champion. I will, however, venture to guess that his daughter would be much better off if daddy dearest stayed out of her life for good. Just my opinion, of course. Regards, Matt |

I second your vote on the Robert Byrne game, which is accompanied by the nice story that the people following the game in a nearby room, with moves relayed by runners, were told by the GM commentator that Fischer was losing at the very moment that Byrne was resigning. For the record, Fischer wins included in "The World's Greatest Chess Games" were D.Byrne-BF 1956, R. Byrne-BF 1963/4, BF-Panno Buenos Aires 1970, BF-Larsen, Match game 1, Denver 1971, BF-Petrosian Match game 7 Buenos Aires 1971, BF-Spassky, Game 6 1972, and BF-Spassky, Game 1 1992. |
