While Larry Parr will always refuse to admit error, and instead pretend to confess to some lesser crime (here, not spelling out a subtle distinction for his presumed-ignorant audience), he is probably dead right in thinking he has been, once again, accused of outright lying. But I don't think he intended to lie, in this case. He was merely churning out more ad homenim slop against his"bitter enemy," Edward Winter. In the process, Mr. Parr decided it would be "useful" to draw a distinction between historians and antiquarians, in order to "lower" Mr. Winter a notch or two, and thumb his nose at Winter's "A Chess Omnibus" by recategorizing it as mere archival stuff. water-muddying counterattack rather than admit error. Parr took pains to label Winter as a "not a historian" and drafted Hilbert for the cause, only to find that Hilbert doesn't share Parr's opinions. In addition to the fact that Mr. Hilbert clearly differed with Mr. Parr (despite the latter's attempts to obfuscate this) on whether or not Winter was indeed, an historian, I think the real point to be noted is that Hilbert praised Winter's work to the skies, while poor Larry Parr is still suffering the after-effects of a man who hopes and prays for his "enemies" to be rained upon, but the rain never comes. Edward Winter's A Chess Omnibus clearly ranks as one of the finest chess history productions of the decade, if not of many decades. If by some necessity I were forced to spend the next full year with only one chess book at hand, this is the one I would select." - John Hilbert, review of A Chess Omnibus at The Chess Cafe. My advice to poor Mr. Parr, is to drop his obfuscating attempts and have a go at the indexing -- attack at the weakpoint (revealed by none other than John Hilbert)! Surely Edward Winter has, at one time or another, criticized somebody for botching their index. What comes around, goes around. Turnabout is fairplay. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if GM Larry Evans had been scolded by Winter for some indexing imperfections. It's time for the hunter, to become the hunted. LOL |
