The New York Times on March 31 1859 is yet another story of Morphy's exploits, including his win over Mongredien. However, it also gives an interesting twist; that to choose from the 100 players who want to play Morphy, they would be divided into groups of 20 to select 5 challengers for Morphy. Does anyone know whether this competition to challenge Morphy actually took place, and if so any details of how it was organized/what happened in it? Thanks! Jerry Spinrad |

Yes that competition took place.
Morphy played 8 of the top players in Paris chosen in the way that previous article described in a BLINDFOLDED Simul. I think this is one of the most amazing blindfold simuls ever because it lasted 10 hours against strong players and Morphy didnt as much take a sip of water. He sat motionless for the entire time in a wierd Morphy trance. You can see the October 19th, 1859 New York times store he http://www.academicchess.com/learn/l...lindfoldchessn yt.shtml (you may need to copy and paste this link.) Also you can play through the eight games which are great amateur vs master games he http://www.academicchess.com/images/...ndfoldchess.ht m Finally you can see a great picture show about Morphy he http://www.academicchess.com/learn/l...ssacredone_fil es/frame.htm Again...Some of these links are very long so you may need to cut and paste them. It just re-confirms to me that Morphy was one of the very best players ever. http://wwww.academicchess.com Best Free Learning Site on the Planet .. |
