Default Susan Polgar

Dear Nick:

That is a very good question. I do not know how he knows. But if he
is who I think he is, then he would definitely know her quite a bit.
But I am not going to speculate. In addition, even if I wanted to, I
cannot do it because it may end up being used against her in her
divorce trial.

Another possible explanation is Susan has done countless Q&A sessions
on various Internet Chess Servers and at many chess events in the past
year or two. Any of the thousands of people who attended those Q&A
sessions could basically write the same thing he did. She is usually
quite candid about most topics unless her lawyer advised her not to do
so.

She has publicly said many times that publishing that book was a bad
mistake. The reason for that is the book does not reflect her
personality. It only reflects her husband's personality. She could
have had the book written by a professional and published by a major
company. But there is nothing she can do about it now. She has also
talked about many of the things he posted.

Those are my 2 guesses. Either one is possible.

How do I know the facts about her?

Susan and I have known each other since the 1985-86 New York Open.
That was when I met the Polgars but I was always closer to Susan than
her sisters because our ages are similar. In addition, she lives in
the US for a long time. We have stayed good friends since. In 1998,
I moved to Forest Hills, NY, about 5 minutes from where she lived.
She was helping me with various business projects of mine. In the
summer of 2001, I helped her with the NY City Mayor's Cup Tournament.
The tournament was a success. We even had the NYC Sports Commissioner
Ken Podziba and NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani attended the opening ceremony.
Irina Krush got her GM norm and Dmitry Schneider got his IM norm in
that tournament. During the tournament, she asked if my business
partner and I would be interested in representing her. We agreed.

On 9/11/2001, Susan and I were supposed to have a business meeting
right near the WTC early that morning. I was all dressed ready to go
pick her up for the meeting when I received a phone call from Susan
informing me of what took place. I then saw on TV the second plane
hitting the other tower. That gave both of us a real wake-up call.
We realized that we could have been right there if the meeting would
have been just a little earlier. That was when I decided to sell all
my businesses to turn my full time focus into doing something I love
dearly. We agreed to step up our efforts to do more for chess, the
game that gave us so much.

Since then, we have collaborated on a number of chess projects. At
this moment, beside our various mutual chess projects (mainly to
promote chess), I also help her train 4-6 hours daily to prepare for a
number of major events in 2004. I also work with the other members of
the Women's Olympiad program.

I am confident that the official announcements for many of the planned
events in 2004 will be announced in the near future. The first
contract has been signed a few days ago and the second contract will
be signed shortly. I truly hope that once these events take place,
chess as we know it will be changed forever. If I am correct, this
will help US Chess dramatically. We shall see.

I hope I have answered your question.

Best Regards,
Paul

Zsuzsa is not done with her divorce yet. I also doubt that she would
want to be in a relationship so quickly after what she has to go through
right now. Her main focus at the moment is to help the chess community.
Women's chess and scholastic chess are also very big on her list.

Dear Mr. Truong:

Thanks for clarifying the matter of GM Zsuzsa Polgar's marital status.
Your post has raised some questions that I hope you are able to answer.

In the thread, "if you think Polgar is still world champion"
(18 February 2003), "Bob Bennett" wrote to me:

"The facts are very simple: ... Zsuzsa never claimed any fame to herself.
The book Queen of the Kings Game was written by *her ex-husband*. She was
very unhappy with the book herself. If anyone knows Zsuzsa personally, you
would understand it was not the same person who wrote the book. She is a
true ambassador to the chess world, a classy and graceful woman. In fact,
that was one of her reasons for *the divorce* beside emotional and mental
abuse by him for many years, etc.

Rather than feeling pity for herself, she is currently giving her heart and
soul to help promote chess for women and children in America. She has given
her time, money and energy to help chess grow while never asking for anything
in return. She deserves our thanks, not criticism."

What "Bob Bennett" wrote to me and what you wrote to Jerome Bibuld seem quite
close. Like you, evidently, "Bob Bennett" also "knows Zsuzsa personally"--very
personally--if he's able to reveal truthfully such intimate details about her
private life. According to you now, Zsuzsa Polgar's divorce is still pending
and presumably has not yet become a matter of the public record. But "Bob
Bennett" clearly implied that Zsuzsa Polgar was *already divorced*.

1) How did "Bob Bennett" get his facts about Zsuzsa Polgar's private life?
2) Did "Bob Bennett" have Zsuzsa Polgar's permission to reveal those facts?
3) Why did you, as Zsuzsa Polgar's representative and friend, *not* write
anything here earlier to dispute "Bob Bennett" if his facts were incorrect?

Also, as far as I know, the book, "Queen of the King's Game", is still being
advertised in "Chess Life" next to the regular column written by Zsuzsa Polgar
and you. If Zsuzsa Polgar is truly "very unhappy with the book herself" (as
"Bob Bennett" claimed), then why has she *not* (as far as I know) made any
public retraction or apology to GM Xie Jun on account of its statements about
her and other Chinese players?

"I take offense to the manifold violation of truth in your story and the
ill-natured style of writing."
--GM Xie Jun (30 August 1999: from her open letter to GM Zsuzsa Polgar)

As GM Zsuzsa Polgar's representative, you may be able to answer some of
these questions. I hope that you can. Thanks in advance.

--Nick
