What is Pascal's wager?

Here are links to some articles about Pascal's Wager:

As far as I know, Pascal's Wager has about no credibility today even among
avowed Christian philosophers. For instance, I know a university lecturer on
philosophy who's a Christian, and he has dismissed Pascal's Wager as untenable.

Isn't he the guy that said you couldn't find an honest man with a fishing
pole? StanB

No, according to legend, Diogenes of Sinope (the 'Cynic') walked around Athens
while carrying a lighted lantern in broad daylight. When he was asked to
explain what he was doing, Diogenes replied: "I am looking for an honest man."

I'm curious if you professionally involved in philosophy? I agree
that many philosophers shy away from pascal's wager. But often times
you see many bad reasons to reject it stated. Although Pascal's
original argument may have problems I think their definitely are some
permutations that are tough to refute. I posted one on the web about
7 years ago and also argued with several philo teachers over its
merits. I posted the link to my posts earlier in this thread. I also
read about every article I coudl get on it that might apply to my
arguement. (not allot applied) Anyway I saw allot of people
dismissing it for bad reasons. Since no one really trys to justify it
(except this professor at Pitt Dr Rescher ?sp?)the problems with the
criticisms never really comes to the surface.

I think this argument in fact has force in shaping our beliefs and I
am not at all convinced it is irrational.
