Is there an inexpensive book or series suitable for weekly chess lessons? I
am a high school coach (not that great a player, about 1600) and I would
like to give individual lessons to some of my students. What I need help
with is laying out the topics (what should come first) and finding
appropriate materials. My best players are about as strong as I am, and we
have a lot of under 1000 class players.

Have you considered help from the USCF?
http://www.uschess.org/scholastic/
might give some ideas and free materials.

Good luck.

Two suggestions:

1. the Dutch, also in English available, TASC CD with the official teaching
program of the Dutch chess federation;
See http://www.chesscentral.com/software/tascsoftware.htm
In dutch there is also a teacher's manual as a didactic aid.

2. look at Convekta's chess site for their networked teaching course 'Chess
School for Networks ' and 'Advanced Chess School: network version '

Succes,

Try www.chessforstudents.com. They have really great books for teaching
lessons to a club and the books are real affordable.

Hi.

"Chess Training for Budding Champions" by Jesper Hall deal with this theme.
For hints of lessons you should also look at Dan Heisman's colomn at
www.chesscafe.com.

In the 'Library' section of this site, they have a detailed PDF file with
somewhere around 50 lesson plans. The material seems very well suited for
novices.
