Dear Mr. Chapman,

Heil Dubya!

How right you are! And thanks for reminding me. (I guess in some areas, I
realio trulio am getting dotty.) Now, I remember not liking Pergamon Chess and
switching to BCM, because I thought Chandler was doing an excellent job. I
haven't dealt with BCM in many, many years. Isn't it still the official organ
of the BCF?

I don't mind your condemning United Statesian genocide on the North American
continent, but I do wish you had left in my final (parenthetical) question.

Dear Mr. Bibuld,

Chess was taken over by that ebullient Bohemian Captain Bob Maxwell, who
promptly renamed it Pergamon Chess. I have to report that it remained under
his unfit stewardship until his industry was ended by his suicide. A well
regarded consortium which included IM Malcolm Pein subsequently bought it
off the receiver in the early 1990s; at the same time they opened their
shop in the Euston Road.

BCM or British Chess Magazine is a totally different magazine, at various
times it has belonged to GM Murray Chandler, the BCF, and its present
owners.

Der Dr. Blair,

Heil Dubya!

Hear! Hear! to a GREAT idea!

I think the current issue has one annotated
game, which is pitifully little current chess
content.

_
Again, I would prefer black-and-white format,
cheaper grade of paper, etc., if it would
allow for more content.

Another idea I was wondering about is the
possibility that Chess Life could make a deal
with the British Chess Magazine (or Chess) to
run some of their international chess coverage
(and perhaps the book reviews). Everyone has
their own opinion about how to improve Chess Life.
My preference would be to see more international
stuff and reviews. Perhaps it would make Chess
Life better and cheaper if a deal with another
magazine could be worked out. As it is, I
think that only a very small percentage of
USCF members sees the BCM and Chess articles.

Dear Mr. Bibuld,

Your fractionally ambiguous language reminds me of a BCF meeting when the
question was raised: "What use are chess grandmasters anyway? even Cruft's
(the leading UK dog show) winners can be used for breeding." At least one
GM raised his head hopefully.

BCM has not been the official newsletter of the BCF for as far back as I can
remember (1970), even when the BCF owned it.

Regards,

Simon.

Dear Mr. Bibuld,

Ahem, as far as I can recall, 'chapman Billy' is not Chinese. :-)
The secret password is 'Burns. Robert Burns.', not 'Zhong. Zhang Zhong.' :-)

No, as 'chapman Billy' already has mentioned.

continent, but I do wish you had left in my final (parenthetical) question.

The BCM's 'present owners' are different to 'the BCF'.

Here's an account of what the United States was doing in the Philippines
about one century ago:

"Wood and his subordinates soon learned that forty acres of jungle land were
no compensation, from the Moro viewpoint, for the destruction of their ancient
society. Thousands of Moros defied the occupation laws, refused to pay their
poll taxes, and took to the bush in revolt....

At that stage of the 'pacification' of the Moro Province it was possible to
whip the Moros wherever they stood and fought, and take few casualties, because
the Americans were equipped with modern weapons. Also the Moros foolishly
copied not only the Spanish weapons but the Spanish tactics....

Again in 1906, when Governor Wood himself took the field against rebellious
Moros on the island of Jolo, it was demonstrated how the Moros were defeating
themselves by demonstrations of machismo, by preferring to stand and die
because as warriors they were guaranteed passage to paradise, which was
infinitely more attractive than being governed by Americans. About six hundred
Moros had fortified the crater of Bud Dajo, a heavily wooded volcanic mountain
that could be approached by only three trails....The ascent was so difficult
that a mountain howitzer had to be hauled up by block and tackle. When they
(the American soldiers) reached the crater, they were met with a shower of
javelins, knives, bullets, and boulders. Among the defenders were many women,
who dressed themselves as men and fought just as bravely.

The Moros would not surrender, but fought to the last man and woman.
Practically all of the six hundred rebels, male and female, were killed in the
hand-to-hand fighting in the crater, and one-fourth of General Wood's troops
were killed or wounded. When news of that bloody victory reached the States,
there was an outcry of protest in the press and on the Senate floor. The War
Department cabled Wood demanding particulars on charges that there had been a
'wanton slaughter of men, women, and children'. John Sharp Williams of
Mississippi read before the Senate a parody of the Tennyson epic which he
titled 'Charge of the Wood Brigade':

Chased them from everywhere,
Chased them all onward,
Into the crater of death,
Drove them--six hundred!
'Forward, the Wood Brigade!
Spare not a one', he said.
'Shoot all six hundred!'

....General Wood replied: '...I believe that some of our own hard-praying
ancestors dealt with the Pequot Indians in a somewhat similar manner, and
on a great deal less provocation.'"

Ich hatt' einen Kameraden, im Felde unbesiegt, nicht wahr? :-)

Das heult und bellt und grunzt--ich kann
Ertragen kaum den Duft der Sieger.
Doch still, Poet, das greift dich an--
Du bist so krank, und schweigen ware klueger.
