Aryeh Davidoff: Lev Khariton's comments on FIDE Congress and
Kasparov-Fritz match

A couple of quotations from www.worldchessrating.ru

"The FIDE Committee is satisfied to praise Grandmaster Garri
Kasparov's friendly attitude that he revealed during the negotiations
on his match with Ponomariov"
My comment: Most likely, for this friendly attitude Kasparov was
awrded the right to play the World Championship match with the winner
of KO tournaments in April 2004. In other words, he was "appointed"
World Champion! Congratulations, FIDE and Garri!

Another quotation: From F.Friedel's interview::
"There is no guarantee that chess players will repeat Kasparov's score
against the computer"
My comment:Obviously, Friedel means that no chess player in the world
save Kasparov will be able to play Fritz. Well, I have no doubt that
both Kasparov and Friedel already know the score of the upcoming
match. Kasparov plays with the "opponent" devised by Friedel, his
friend!Chess circus is in full swing!

No, you are wrong. FIDE could not appoint Kasparov the champion.
That's why the match with Ponomariov was cancelled without any
punishment for Ponomariov.

FIDE cannot award the title to a player who did not make a single game
to earn the honour. Ponomariov knew that he was safe and the only way
he could lose the title to Kasparov was by agreeing to play the match.
In the situation like this everybody would insist on his conditions.
Ponomariov's disqualification would not make Kasparov the champion.

What FIDE could do was to postpone the unification process till the
new champion would be crowned. Ponomariov cannot lose the title to
Kasparov, but he can lose it to somebody else. The hope is that Mr.
somebody else would be more eager to pass the crown to Garri. This is
likely, many people would agree to be a world champion for 3 months.
But then again... as soon as Mr. somebody else is crowned he would
think a little bit differently.

The second half of the reunification process is unlikely to go ahead.
Kramnik made it clear that he does not have any obligation before
FIDE. It is evident that Kasparov cannot get a match with Kramnik for
the alternative title. If he could find money for the match he would
not make peace with FIDE.

FIDE's title is Kasparov's only chance to get any crown back and
collect good prize money. It is only fair that he has to share that
money with other people.

chess-groupie axis. In short, let the masters play then come back & tell
us who's the 'best'. My tip: - Anand, but only if he can overcome his
fear of the 'beef' vindaloo..
