In his www.chesscafe.com column "Checkpoint" (Batsford Blasts Back)
Carsten Hansen comments on the ups and downs of Batsford noting that
"Batsford was terribly close to going out of business a couple of
years ago... The first couple of years since then have had many rocky
moments, with several sub-par books by authors like Gufeld".
Sub-par books by authors like Gufeld! To me this remark sound simply
outrageous. Last year the chess world lost one of the most unusual
players, journalists, and Knights of our game. Gufeld did a lot for
poplularizing and promoting chess. He believed, probably more than
anyone else, that chess was the highest form of art. He participated
in many outstanding chess tournaments - first of all in many Soviet
Championships in the 60-70s. These were top-class events. He defeated
such giants as Tal, Spassky, Smyslov. Gufeld was the author of many
chess books.Most of them were interesting both for professionals and
amateurs.I knew him personally and I can say that Eduard put all his
heart in everything he was doing - as a chess coach (he was Maya
Chiburdabidze's coach for many years), as a chess player, as an
author. Gufeld was a kind and communicative person. Of course,
Hansen has the right to have his own taste in chess books and chess
authors. But at least he must have some tact to respect those who have
left this world.
All this leaves me wondering how the editors of ChessCafe, censoring
my (and probably, not only mine!) publications, allow such a
profanation of the late grandmaster.

i also considered Eddie my friend. He was a great man in every way.
The sanctimonious word-monkey who runs chesscafe's bulletin board is just
envious of anyone better than he is. That's why he allows such crap to go
on. But Mr. Russell himself is a pretty cool guy so I am willing to overlook
it.
ps if you doubt the person in question is a word- monkey, then search for
the phrase 'pedantic puffery' in his writings. he also envisages his
vitriole under the self-congratultory rubricum 'Heroic Tales..'
and I am willing to lay odds that if he reads this, he will anonymously
correct my grammar and style without regard to content.
