Default 1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices & Combinations", by Fred Reinfeld

I would like to see all of the answers to 1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices &
Combinations", by Fred Reinfeld. I have started to get them by asking
crafty for the answers. I have done the first 22, but it will take a long
time if I do them all myself. does anyone out there share my desire to do
this project? I will help you set up.

surprisingly, problem # 3 is not a win for white.. crafty shows a score
on -2.55 a depth 12. what does the actual book show for #3.

also, #11 shows a score of +0.25 a depth of 13. what does the book show?

The book says:

1. P-B4! N-K2
If 1....NxP; 2 RxN
2. P-B5
Winning the pinned piece.

But as you say, here is something:

Analysis by Fritz 7:

1. -+ (-2.41): 1.c4 Bxg3 2.hxg3 c6 3.b3 Re7 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.Nd4
2. -+ (-3.41): 1.Bxd6 cxd6 2.c4 Rc8 3.b3 Re7 4.Rxe7 Kxe7 5.Nd4 Kd7 6.Nf5 g6
7.Kb2 h5 8.cxd5

I recently went through this book again for, I don't know, maybe the third
or fourth time. This time I downloaded the .pgn and set the positions up in
Fritz and Pocket Fritz. At first, it was very frustrating, because many of
the answers are not the best line. Many positions that are presented as
wins are actually quite unclear. Not surprisingly, this happens more often
in longer variations than shorter variations. "Long analysis is wrong
analysis," as they say.

For this reason, I recently posted a question asking if there was any way to
extract 2- or 3-move tactics using one of the database programs. It seems
to me that it would be much more beneficial to really hammer the pure
tactical patterns -- knight fork, pin, etc. -- into my subconscious rather
than 8-move variations with a number of tactical patterns that may or may
not be correct.

I know there are books out there that do this. But the ones I have seen
usually have 100 - 300 positions which are easily memorized with only a
couple of readings. I would like a database with HUNDREDS of knight forks,
HUNDREDS of pins, HUNDREDS of skewers, etc, none more than 4 or 5 ply.

I recently ordered CT-Art hoping to find what I am looking for.

I still think 1001 WCSAC is of some value. The answers, though not always
correct (maybe 25% are wrong?), do demonstrate tactical and combinational
themes, which should help one recognize the patterns.

Reinfeld's book on Checkmates is much more accurate, because the lines are
almost always a forced mate.

Anyway, to answer your question:

#3
1.P-B4! N-K2
(If 1...NxP; 2. RxN
2 P-B5
Winning the pinned piece.

If I recall, White is already behind in material in this position, thus the
negative evaluation by Crafty.

#11
White keeps the extra piece by a counter-pin:
1. Q-R8! Resigns.

Buy the book. It costs next to nothing. Mine says USD10 on the back. With
discount from amazon UK I got it for GBP4 or 5. I'm on 889 and it's falling
apart but it's far and away the best value chess book I've ever bought. A
bit like LCMBM I can't believe there isn't a whole 'sub genre' of books like
this.

Like others have said a large number of the problems are not wins but it's
all part of the fun. I carry a pencil around to mark off the ones I've done
and put a ? by the ones which are questionable, then I run them past His
Craftiness later. CT-Art seems to be a good alternative and if I'm a good
boy I think Father Christmas might get me one of those. In my experience
1001wcsc really does improve your chess. FWIW next time through rather than
doing 1 to 1001 I think it might be best to pick one from each of the 20
sections. BTW another good book for a similar level is 'The Art of the
Checkmate' by two French guys Renaud and erm I can't remember. A little gem.

cheers

I've owned several copies of this book and every single one has had the answers
in the back.

The book is from Georges Renaud and Victor Kahn, indeed a good book but, not
the same style as 1001serie.
TAOTC is a teaching book + exercises., 1001 serie are only exercises.
regards dirk
ps:contact me if you want to start up for the Algebraic solutions of the
1001 serie.
