Is it possible to buy a chess set from Russia through
the internet or by mail? I imagine they would cost much
less than those for sale in western Europe.

Yes it is. The Chess sets of Kolob sell through the web site

The set I got from them was very nice and reasonably priced. They also
sell their sets on Ebay sometimes.

yeah, they do cost less from russia, but they do not always arrive (postal
corruption in russia). and usa credit card companies generally do not honor
charges made in russia because of all the attendant problems.
theres a nice russian company from St petersbourg which promotes itself via
e-bay. search for chess sets there and then jump to the russian site-- it is
in english.
