Beatriz Marinello has gone to Chile for a month
I have just received the shocking news that USCF President, Beatriz Marinello has gone to Chile for a month. She is apparently sick and in the hospital. I wish her a speedy recovery. The question is who is going to be running the USCF while she is gone. Beatriz is a native of Chile. Sam Sloan |

This arrangement which gave Hanke the power to run the federation is gone. One reason for the split is the insistence by Hanke that the USCF withdraw from FIDE. Beatriz and Schultz are both big FIDE people and will never agree for the USCF to withdraw. They would like a bigger role in FIDE for the USCF, not a smaller one. Another divisive factor is that Hanke wants to stop the publication of Chess Life magazine. No other board member agrees with that. One immediate fatality has been the Woman's Chess Olympics Training Squad. With Hanke trying to stop the USCF from even sending a team to the Olympiad, the training squad is now in hiatis. With Beatriz at least temporarily out of the picture, here is what we are left with: Schultz is allied with Brady. Brady has not attended a board meeting in some time and has effectively given his proxy to Schultz. Camaratta is a strong but independent member of the board. Shutt has never been interested in anything other than scholastic chess, but wiil probably vote with Camaratta. Hanke has finally been recognized to be the cook and nut that he really is and is out of the picture, but he would have the swing vote in any Camaratta and Shutt vs. Schultz and Brady showdown. With the board now a rudderless ship, that leaves Goichberg in charge, as he is the Acting Executive Director. I believe that Goichberg will occupy that position for a long time, possibly for years. There is simply nobody to replace him. I doubt that he will quit and there will not be the votes to remove him. I see this as a good thing. I would like for Goichberg to remain as permanent executive director. However, there is a lot of opposition to this. I see resignations coming. I can think of three board members who are probably close to resigning. The one board member who I am 100% certain will not resign is Frank Camaratta. The result of Dubeck sending out a letter demanding that Camaratta resign is that Camaratta absolutely will not resign. Sam Sloan |

Sorry for the error. Hanke is a kook, not a cook.

What a very bad mess...
We certainly do not need this. "Sam Sloan" wrote in message ... It is, however, shocking that such a young and beautiful woman as Beatriz Marinello should have a serious illness. Illness cares not about beauty... We should all pray and hope for her speedy recovery. Agreed (this may be a first...) John |

Complete rubbish from Sloan as usual. He has no idea what is going on, so he
launches a lot of malicious gossip to make himself seem like an insider. Unfortunately, his detailed and confident inaccuracies probably give some people the impression he has a clue. Yeah, but if there were 2 or 3 more vacancies, he'd probably have a better shot of winning a seat on the Board. With just one vacancy, the Board is technically not REQUIRED to hold a special election to fill that seat, a measure that was added to the Bylaws last August mostly as a cost saving procedure. However, since we have to hold a SOMOV election this coming year anyway, with a ballot in Chess Life in June, there would be little, if any, added cost to solicit nominations for a one-year term on the Board and hold that election in conjunction with the SOMOV election, on the same ballot. The Bylaws amendment I referred to above also grants the Board the authority to hold a special Board election on a shortened calendar, with fewer pages of Chess Life devoted to election coverage. However, such a decision, even with a shortened calendar, would need to be made fairly soon, probably by the middle of January. Thus, as it isn't really a financial issue, if the Board chooses not to hold a special election it can only be seen as a political decision, one that would seem to flaunt the OMOV movement that many feel put Tim and Beatriz on the Board in the first place. -- Mike Nolan |

Sam has a witches brew of facts, assumptions, and conjecture. For the most
part he is wrong. He has a couple of immaterial items correct. The problem is that his source is out of the loop now. StanB "Sam Sloan" wrote in message ...
