They are not really looking for big pre-game publicity because Lindsborg is a very small place and the event is totally booked up. Anatoly Evgenievich will not be 'moving' to Kansas, as far as I understand ![]() I could write more of the chess school, however it is proper to wait for official announcements which will be forthcoming from gospodin Mikhail Korenman, the director of the school. I think there may be a public live match broadcast, if so, I will post times, dates and URL here - although this broadcast may be a private one. Both Karpov and Kasparov give much of their time, money and support to fundraising events as well as directly working with disadvantaged people. Cordially, Phil Innes |

The tournament dates are Dec 19-23. They are not really looking for big
pre-game publicity because Lindsborg is a very small place and the event is totally booked up. Actually those dates are for the Lindsborg Open and I don't believe Karpov is scheduled to play in it. There is also a Lindsborg Rotary Open scheduled for Dec 19-21 for lower rated players. I don't know about the event being totally booked up, either. I didn't ask specifically, since I will not be playing in the professional level event :-), but the way the director talked today they have plenty of slots available. Karpov did play in Lindsborg this weekend, yesterday and today, in a 6 player round robin tournament, the Lindsborg Invitational. I just got back from watching two of todays rounds. I had to leave before the final round, but Karpov was leading the tournament with 3 points in the first 5 rounds. In 2nd place was IM John Donaldson with 2 1/2 points. He drew with Karpov in the first round today. Karpov has been in Lindsborg for about 9 days helping with clinics for juniors and overseeing a juniors tournament. Lindsborg is a small Kansas town of about 4,000 people and a very nice liberal arts college, Bethany College. Lindsborg is known as Little Sweden and is a touristy place nestled in the middle of Kansas. They have a very active chess community and club run by Mikhail Korenman, who is a friend of Anatoly Karpov, I believe. The other 4 players we Alexander Onischuk, Ivan Morovic, Yuri Shulman - all GM's and another IM, named Charbonneau from Montreal who filled in for Ulf Andersson because he cancelled out. Charbonneau also drew with Karpov in their match. I was told by the tournament director that he actually will be a GM when the next ratings are released - he was listed as 2485 in this tournament. Not bad for a 20 year old. They used chess boards and chess men that have computer chips in them and transmitted the moves to computers that displayed them, for all three games, on boards on a large screen. They were using the 25 minute and 10 second extra per move time control. This was interesting to me as I had never seen it used. The games lasted for about an hour or so each. However, since you always got 10 more seconds after each move, you could never run out of time as long as you made your moves in less than then 10 seconds even if you had virtually no time left on your clock. Very enjoyable way to spend a day. I would have also been there yesterday but we had a large snowstorm on Friday and Saturday and the roads were in terrible condition most of the day. Karpov was leading the tournament with 3 points in the first 5 rounds. Oops, that should read in the first 4 rounds, since there are only 5 rounds total in a 6 player round robin. :-0 Dick (chagrined) Schneiders |

He drew with Karpov in the first round today. Also, there was a very attractive young Russian female in the front row with a large, ahem, sweater that added to my enjoyment of this event. She looked way too young to be part of Karpov's entourage, so I assume that she was with Onischuk. Anybody ever seen her at other events attended by him? She was about 5' 6", very black hair and wore a sweater that was working well beyond the normal duty expected - probably cashmere. I never envisioned that I would go to a chess tournament and be distracted by a sexy female. My wife was with me, so I wasn't able to let my distraction become too obvious. :-) Dick Schneiders |
