How many people are recorded to have died while playing a
tournament match or a chess game in general? Ivan the Terrible
is said to have died while playing chess, but I'm not sure if
it is true. I found the following record in the chess column of
an old German magazine. According to it the Dutch doctor and
former champion Adolf Olland died while playing a match in the
official Dutch championship in 1933, at the age of 66. He was
playing White against Hamming. Here are the moves

An interesting anecdote, but there are a couple of errors in the game
score.

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 d6 6.Be2 e6 7.O-O Be7
8.b3 O-O 9.Kh1 a6 10.f4 Qc7 11.Bf3 Bd7 12.Nce2 b5 13.Bb2 Rfd8 14.Ng3
Rac8 15.Rc1 Nxd4 16.Qxd4 Qc5 17.Qd3 b4 18.Bd4 Qb5 19.Qe3 d5 20.Be2 Qb7
21.Bd3 dxe4 22.Bxf6 Bxf6 23.Nxe4 Bc3 24.Nd6 Qc7 25.Nxc8 Bxc8

The Chesslib database gives this as a win for black, but it could
possibly be in error regarding the result.

Thanks, I can't quote a source for the anecdote because it was
taken from a chess column cut out of an old German magazine which
I found inside a chess book...

I think it's disgusting that we encourage children to play this dangerous
game at school. The boxes chess sets come in should have at least a third
of the front covered in prominent warnings: `Playing chess kills,'
`Playing chess while pregnant harms your child,' and so on. We should
increase the tax on chess equipment, too, and definitely keep under-18's
out of chess clubs.

Also, as a matter of urgency, experiments should be done to determine the
relative danger of _watching_ games of chess. A few years ago, you'd have
been laughed at for claiming that `passive playing' could be harmful but
people are becoming increasingly worried that it, too, could be a health
risk. After all, people who play passively can often be heard suggesting
moves under their breath.

I'm also worried about the chess literature. Companies like Batsford and
Everyman claim that their books do not cause people to start playing chess
but are merely intended to induce existing players to change from one
opening to another. Frankly, this claim is so palpably ludicrous as to be
unworthy of being addressed.

I'd love to write more but you'll have to excuse me -- I'm just going to
pop outside for a quick game of chess.

Dave.

Vladimar Bagirov had a heart attack and died at a chess tournement in
Finland

Here are the moves of Bagirov's last game.

[Date "2000.??.??"]
[Black "Bagirov Vladimir"]

1. d4 e6 2. c4 b6 3. Nc3 Bb7 4. a3 f5 5. Nf3 Nf6 6. g3 g6 7. Bg2 Bg7
8. O-O O-O 9. Qc2 a5 10. Rd1 Na6 11. Bf4 h6 12. h4 d6 13. Rab1 Ne4
14. Na4 Qe8 15. b4 axb4 16. axb4 b5 17. Nb2 Nxb4 18. Qb3 Na2 19. Rd3 b4
20. Nd1 Bc6 21. Ne1 Ra3 22. Qb2 Nac3 23. Nxc3 Nxc3 24. Rxc3 Rxc3
25. Qxb4 Bxd4 26. Bd2 Bxg2 27. Bxc3 Bxc3 28. Qxc3 Be4 29. Rc1 Ba8
30. Nf3 Qe7 31. c5 e5 32. Qa5 Bxf3 33. exf3 Rf7 34. Qd2 Kh7 35. Qd5 Rf6
36. c6 Qf7

The moves are not recorded after this, but they did actually play beyond the
time control at 40 moves. At one point after this Bagirov got the heart
attack and stopped moving. However, because he was not in time trouble and
because he did not collapse on the floor, it took quite a long time before
anyone realized what had actually happened. It looked just as he was
thinking for his next move. After the organizers finally realized what had
happended, Bagirov was taken to hospital, but he died there on the same day.

The position after black's 36th is a simple win for black. The game was
anyway declared as win for white.

I thought he'd died of a heart attack. Perhaps he got so
frightened he might choke to death that he had a heart
attack?

The Duke of Brunswick (of Paris Opera House fame, and a fascinating lunatic) was
playing chess, suddenly got up and told his opponent not to cheat him, and went
to his room and died.
