THE NEW EDITOR
By Larry Parr Despite all the unfounded attacks on Kalev Pehme before he even began editing the January 2004 issue of Chess Life (which was twice the size of the one in December) I see no reason to criticize his performance so far. As a matter of fact, the USCF website says that the February issue featuring Kasparov on the cover ("he goes deeper into the matrix") will be mailed to members on December 29. If this turns out to be true, then it will arrive at least TWO WEEKS BEFORE previous issues have reached members. In January I noticed a slight stylistic change to reduce clutter and save space. Instead of 1. e4 the dots have been eliminated as in 1 e4. I heard that this improvement produced an internal battle! One can only hope that our worthy politicians will not meddle with the content of the magazine or peddle any more happy talk in its pages. It's too soon to judge the new editor's performance, of course, but he should be given a fair chance to succeed. So far I like what I see. |

Dear Larry,
Heil Dubya! Hear! Hear!! How right you are, Larry! I go further than you, however. FROM WHAT I'VE SEEN SO FAR, Pehme is the second or third best editor CHESS LIFE has had. He hasn't put out enough issues for my statement to have ANY value. Just take it as a PRELIMINARY judgment and hope for the future. Morgen die ganze Welt! Uhmuhrikkka, Uhmuhrikkka über Alles! (Was 11 September 2001 Kristallnacht or the date of the Reichstag fire?) Fraternally, Jerry Bibuld (I go on trial at 77 Lexington Avenue, White Plains, NY, at 1400 hours, 5 January, for refusing to move away from a demonstration site -- against the U. S. invasion of Iraq -- when ordered by a member of the Army of Occupation of Westchester County, despite the fact that the demonstrators had a "permit" to do exactly what I was doing, at the time and place I was doing it. Twice, the U. S. INjustice system has postponed trial, in a case which should be dismissed out of hand. But, of course, that's part of the system. This takes up MY time -- and that of my lawyer, whose time is worth more than I'm PAYING him. Meanwhile, the judges, assistant district attorneys, court clerks, bailiffs, stenotypists and other apparatchniks are being paid by MY taxes and the taxes of other citizens and subjects of the United States. My son, Douglass, has coined a lovely and apt phrase that I am proud to use: HYPOCRISY, NOT DEMOCRACY!) gens una sumus |

the January 2004 issue of Chess Life
Speaking of that, I happened to pick up that issue on the newsstand, the first issue I've had in about 9 years. My aren't what they used to be, but I find the font used in the tournament announcements and "Checking In" to be too small. I don't intend this as a criticism, but they are too small for me. ------------------------------------- Replace you know what by "j" to email. |
