Yes, I can recall some reports of non-blindfold simultaneous chess exhibitions
having taken place in the Soviet Union after 1930.

I had assumed from the context of what I quoted from Mike Murray's post,
to which I was responding, that it should be evident that I was referring to
*blindfold* 'simultaneous chess exhibitions'. You are right, however, that
I also should have explicitly written 'blindfold'. Actually, I *already*
had explicitly written that in an earlier post of mine.

For the record, in the rec.games.chess.analysis thread, "How do you read
chess notation?" (15 August 2003), I wrote (to Mark Houlsby):
"Beginning in 1930, *blindfold chess* simultaneous exhibitions were banned
in the Soviet Union."

In my later response, unfortunately, I was typing too quickly and I
happened to misquote myself, for which I have only myself to blame. :-)

By the way, as far as I know, individual blindfold games (for training
purposes) were not banned in the Soviet Union.

Ever since Mike Murray began trolling me (and flagrantly distorting what I
had written, as Mark Houlsby noted) in the RGCP thread, "Sportsmanship and
pre-arranged results", I have been reluctant to write anything in response
to his posts. Yet this subject seems non-controversial enough, and I
thought that my post could be of some general interest.

I am pleased that you seem to think highly of my general knowledge of chess
and many other subjects. Of course, I expect that some writers here do know
more about chess (or chess history) than I do. Yet pleased be assured that
I do know more about chess (and chess history) than I have the time or the
inclination to write about in the chess newsgroups.

Son, when a hoss throws ya, get right back in the saddle. It's the
way of the West.

For the record, it was his friend Jerome Bibuld who called attention
to possible ambiguities in Nick's post. Mike Murray thought the
meaning of Nick's post was clear enough.
