Default Building a chessboard

A chessboard has
1 square 8 units by 8 units
4 squares 7 units by 7 units
9 squares 6 units by 6 units
etc. up to
64 squares one unit by one unit.

This adds up to 204 squares.

Nobody likes a smartass.

(except me, of course.)

Matt

Hello, I was wondering if someone could tell me
how many squares are needed on a standard chessboard?

There are 204 squares on a standard chessboard.

Wrong!!! That number isn't evenly divided by 8.

Why would the number of squares on the surface of a Klein Bottle have to be
divisible by 8?

David Richerby answered an apparently innocent 'newbie' question about
the chessboard as though it were a problem in a mathematical contest.

The original poster was an obvious troll. It's inconceivable that
somebody would be able to find rec.games.chess.misc but not be able to
find out how big a chessboard is.

Mr. Richerby,

I strongly suspected that the original poster was trolling, but I felt that it
would have been more diplomatic to give him or her, who at least had written
the post in civil terms, the benefit of at least a slight doubt on the subject.
Perhaps the poster was ignorant and too indolent to inquire elsewhere.

It's inconceivable that somebody would be able to find rec.games.chess.misc
but not be able to find out how big a chessboard is.

Given the common abysmal ignorance or stupidity in RGCM posts, I have not yet
been able to determine a certain lower bound to such ignorance or stupidity.

If a Klein bottle could hold water, what would its volumn be? Could it be
filled through a one way valve. Would its volumn be proportional to its size?
