That's because the number of squares on a standard chessboard isn't divisible by eight. A chessboard has
1 square 8 units by 8 units 4 squares 7 units by 7 units 9 squares 6 units by 6 units etc. up to 64 squares one unit by one unit. This adds up to 204 squares. But the person who wants to make a board only needs to know about the 64 squares of area one square unit. |
