Well, it's been about a year since I innocently praised Zhang Zhong's
play in the Corus B tournament, leading to a very long and occasionally interesting thread concerning his name, and nice manners regarding its use. Allow me to begin afresh. First, though the tourney is only 3 games old, Zhang is playing very well. His three draws have been "fighting draws" with his more famous opponents having to struggle to hold the balance. Last year's result appears to reflect his talent. Second, the official Corus site refers to this player as Zhong, Z. (sigh) Here we go again. John |

After playing well and drawing three games, Zhang lost to a smooth
performance by Adams. He recovered for another strong draw (Bareev, I think) but seemed to be expending a lot of energy and not getting full reward. Then came the big test: Kramnik and Anand. Well, let's see, he played well against Kramnik who had to work very hard to win a lovely endgame. Zugzwang as only the finest players can force! This seems to have taken the wind out of Zhang's sails, as Anand gave him a serious whipping on Sunday. Have you ever seen so many useless pieces? Frightful. It really shows the difference between the A and the B group. I am unable to post the pgn from here, but take a look at www.coruschess.com John |
