What if he can't beat 1800-rated knitters, either? That could be
depressing.

If he can't beat 1800's with e4 he should look for 1800's who don't
possess e4 and try to beat _them_.

Are you saying that the board is possessed? Or is that only when playing
e4? Does it have to be 1.e4 or can it be any e4 (like 23.e4!)? What
happens, does the king spin round like in that scary movie or what?

Curiously,

/M.

As someone replied to one of your previous posts, work on basic
tactics. Forget about openings for a while. I am, and it's helping.
Try Yasser Seirawan's book "Winning Chess Tactics" and study it
carefully.

Actually, I did beat an 1800+ once...as Black! One of my best games, I went
out of my usual box and played an sacrificial line of the Scandinavian
(where you don't reclaim the pawn), figuring what the hell, I'm going to
lose anyway, might as well go down screaming in flames...

BUT, he unwisely fianchettoed on the Kingside, giving me a lovely
target...game ended in a suprise middle-game mate! I was a 1200-something
player at the time, so I drag that one out during brag sessions.

It was fun to look over your games. Not that they're masterpieces, of
course. But thanks for posting them.

In the 1st game, you were doing OK until 28. Rb1 Rh8. Now you have to
play 29 Nd1 -- it's the only move! That would still be an OK
position, though it's kind of ugly. So maybe 28 Rb1 was a minor
error. But anyway, you're winning until you played 29 Rg1, and losing
afterwards. So that's a blunder.

In the 2nd game, your opening was not so great (you should play ... a6
to prevent that annoying bishop check before you play ...e5), but your
position was basically playable until the blunder 11 ... Nd4. You
have to guard against his threat, by something like 11 ... O-O-O.

In the 3rd game, you never got a decent position in the opening. I
didn't work hard enough to figure out where your errors were -- I'm
too lazy. The moral is, if you go in for the King's Gambit, you
better expect to work hard at the board, both sides have to.

I wonder if you're joking with all this Bobby this, Bobby that. Of
course, playing 1 e4 "like Bobby Fischer" is not some sort of magic
charm, you still have to play good moves, and if your opponents are
rated in the 1700's and 1800's like these three guys, you have to play
good moves the whole game. And anyway, in the 2nd game you didn't
even play 1 e4, since you had Black :-)
