Default RIDICULOUS crossposting and how to STOP it

There are obviously many people on these groups who are clueless about
the purpose of the groups. The fundamental principle is that just
because it has something to do with chess DOES NOT mean that it should
be posted to every group that has to do with chess because "someone
there might be interested." Someone on these groups might be interested
in my chicken wings recipe, but that doesn't mean it's right to post it
here.

People who want to read about chess computing, but who don't care about
politics or analysis or other stuff, should be able to go to
rec.games.chess.computers and see only on-topic posts. Similar
statements apply to the other groups.

I'm not naiive enough to believe that this post is going to stop the
people who insist on posting to every chess group. But what if--every
time we notice it happening--we reply to the message, trim the groups
it's posted to appropriately, and then include the message "CROSSPOST
LIST TRIMMED" at the top?

This would have the negative effect of slightly increasing the noise on
the non-trimmed groups. However, if people followed up, it would only go
to the proper groups, cutting down noise after that.

I must admit that I personally don't always remember to check the
crosspost list before I reply. However, seeing this message would get me
in the habit of looking more often.

What do you think?

Originally mis-posted to rec.games.chess.computers; corrected.

Please don't do that unless you actually have something to say in your
followup. Just posting to say `You posted to the wrong group' would be
incredibly irritating.

rec.games.chess.computer seems reasonably free of this problem, too. Most
posts seem to go to either just .computer or all three of .misc, .analysis
and .politics.

Happens to everyone, it seems...

Your intentions are good, it's just very difficult to do unless the group(s)
are strictly moderated. A mistake is one thing, but what about those that
INTENTIONALLY spam the newsgroups? What do you suggest about those?

Surely this is less of a "problem" than continual posting about American
football and politics, or military history, or...

Not much to be done, I suspect.

For the record, some of my favourite posts have been OT or misguidedly
cross-posted

I think Sam Sloan is a hell of a lot more irritating than a few
crossposts.

He doesn't irritate me so much, because I killfiled him a LONG time ago
and now only see his posts when someone is foolish enough to reply to
them.

People who gripe about Sam Sloan are more irritating than Sam himself,
because there are more of them and only one Sam Sloan.

And how about those who crosspost to gripe about those who crosspost
to gripe about Sam Sloan? ;-) ;-) ;-)

I used to think they were the scum of the earth but then I realised I was
crossposting to answer a crossposted question about people who crosspost
to gripe about crossposted griping about Sam Sloan.
