Alekhine and the Jews
Just a note from my recent reading. In 1926, the Vienna chess scene divided
into 3 camps. There was the worker's chess group, which viewed chess as a way of
strengthening the proletariat and building Socialism, the German Nationalists,
who didn't allow Jews and other into their clubs, and the Jewish chess
organization, formed in reaction to the Nationalist clubs but without the overt
political ideal of the worker's clubs.
It is interesting to note that Alekhine gave a simul in 1926 for the Jewish group.
Doesn't really affect the issue of whether he wrote the Nazi articles, since I
think most of us view him more as an opportunist than a committed racist, but of
some interest nevertheless.
