Er, what`s the deal with this book?
I learned a new thing from it... Kasparov is from Armenia (?!). What`s the deal? I didn`t buy it, but I know someone who did, and I started looking at it and ... ah... it`s.... different. |

Patrick Wolff's "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess" is generally recognized as being superior to the "Chess for Dummies" book. No, he was born in Baku, nowadays Azerbaijan (then CCCP/USSR) but after his father`s death (Weinstein) he has taken his mother`s name Kasparian which is obviously an Armenian one and changed it a little to sound more Russian. Chapter 19: The Ten Best Chess Players of All Time has this gaff of
Kasparov, Gary (1963 -), Armenia That is one of many mistakes found in Eade's book - a book, by the way, of which his buddy, former USCF treasurer Tom Dorsch said: "Jim Eade has written the best single-volume introduction to chess in the English language." That view is definitely not shared by a majority of the chess players and chess writers I know. George Mirijanian Hi George, we shouldn't slay Jim for a publisher's (?) typo. However, as chess training material goes, interactive tutorial software seem to be now taking over from books alone. The cost is usually the same as for books, but the interactive element provides the student feedback why such-and-such a move is not good in any position, &c. Have you ever tried software as training material? Digitally, Phil Innes |

Could you recommend an interactive digital book on these subject or just give me a hint where to look for them. Thanks in advance. Regards from Poland, Stefek |

Subject: 'Chess for Dummies' by Eade?
On 3 March 2004 "Phil Innes" replied in Message-id: Hi George, we shouldn't slay Jim for a publisher's (?) typo. -snipped- i Digitally, Phil Innes How can Kasparov, Gary (1963 -), Armenia be a publisher's typo? That clearly had to come from the author - an author, by the way, who should have thoroughly proofread the galleys or should have had some competent chess journalist, other than himself, proofread the galleys before the book went to print. The book is full of mistakes, both typographical and factual. George Mirijanian |

Of course I know this already. :-)
I was commenting on the book, saying I learned a "new thing" from it (a sarcastic way of saying "this book lied to me!") "Jerzy" wrote in message ... "Joshua B. Lilly" wrote in message ...
