(Hal Terrie) writes: There was a change made last summer to how the ratings field was formatted, but that affected the monthly updates as well as the Gold Master, since the same program prepares both files. Matt, have you updated your player database since August? I've updated my system religiously since I purchased the WinTD program for my laptop in December 2002. I replaced my old TARATSUP.DBF (the Dec 2003 Golden database) with the Feb 2004 one, so I think I've erased all my other supplements as well, although they're stored in a separate folder. Any suggestions on how I can fix this after I download the WinTD patch from Estima? Regards, Matt |

I would like to see the membership type and perhaps city. Some people
have asked about zip, but as I rarely carry a zip code directory, having the city available might do more to discriminate between the 22.7 John Smiths in any given state. Regards, Ernie Mike Nolan wrote: I'd like to add two fields, the member's birthday (mm/dd only) and the first 3 digits of the zip code. Adding those fields takes us from having nearly 14,000 names that occur in our database more than once (FN+LN matching exactly) to having around 600 where the name, birthday and 3 digit zip code all match. Privacy concerns (eg, COPA) may keep us from providing either the full birthdate or the membership type. Adding full birthdate and membership type reduces the multiple record count to around 400, so it might not add much value. -- Mike Nolan |

Some people have asked about zip, but as I rarely carry a zip code directory, having the city available might do more to discriminate between the 22.7 John Smiths in any given state. The single most common name is actually Michael Smith, with 114 instances. There are only 49 John Smiths, though that doesn't count variations on the name like Jonathan (27), Jon(7), and Jack (10), nor does it count variations on Michael like Mike (17). I also didn't try to extract any middle names or consider first initials. There are more Willian Smith's (66) and Robert Smith's (81) than John Smith's, too. :-) Providing the city could raise the same issue of too much specificity as the five digit zip code, and it takes more space to store, thus it makes for a larger file on the website to download and a larger file on your computer. I don't know if we can provide membership type because it identifies members who are under 14, which raises issues of COPA compliance. If I understand the language in COPA, we may be able to publish the membership type or even the age in the rating supplement, we just can't make that information available on our website. We may be uncomfortably close to the line, if and when they get around to drawing one, by having crosstables of scholastic events available on the website. -- Mike Nolan |
