In the Member's Area of the USCF's website, you can download the rating
supplements. This is usually a very handy tool, but when I downloaded the
32MB February 2004 Golden Database and replaced my previous files with what
was contained in the zip, all I get when I try to look people up is a bunch
on non-sensical numbers.

Is there going to be a fix put online soon?

I accept the fact that *I* may have screwed something up in the process of
updating my database, but I've never had a problem like this before (and
I've updated several times) so I wanted you to know about it. If nobody
else has had any issues with it, then I guess I'll have to figure out what I
did wrong. Just let me know.

I believe there is an upgrade patch for WINTD 4.0 on their web
site that deals with this problem. As I understand it, USCF made a
slight change to the file format in the database. WINTD had to be
revised to handle the new format.

I had the same problem that you did when I followed the directions
that came with the file. I was able to use it by making WinTD 4.0
think that it was a regular supplement update.

You need to rename the file from USCF "Tarsfle1.dbf" and put in a new
directory. Also, include a "Tadskcnt.dat" with '1' in it and
"Taratsup.cvr" with '200402' in the same directory. Tell WinTD to
update the supplement from the directory rather than from a disk.

I would keep a copy of your old rating supplement files as backup
before trying this, but I have not had any problems with it since I
did this.

The Golden database is in the "update" format, but isn't organized the
way the other updates are; the standard updates are TARSFLE1.DBF (and
for diskettes, TARSFLE2.DBF, etc.) combined with a TADSKCNT.DAT to
give the couint of the disks and a TARATSUP.CVR which gives the
supplement "date". The Golden DB unzips as TARATSUP.DBF, which is the
name used by TA for the *expanded* database.

There was a change made last summer to how the ratings field was formatted,
but that affected the monthly updates as well as the Gold Master, since
the same program prepares both files.

Matt, have you updated your player database since August?

There may be another revision of the ratings database format coming
soon, but I don't know if either WinTD or Swis-Sys could handle additional
data fields without a software upgrade.

I'd like to add two fields, the member's birthday (mm/dd only) and the
first 3 digits of the zip code. Adding those fields takes us from having
nearly 14,000 names that occur in our database more than once (FN+LN
matching exactly) to having around 600 where the name, birthday and
3 digit zip code all match.

Privacy concerns (eg, COPA) may keep us from providing either the full
birthdate or the membership type. Adding full birthdate and membership
type reduces the multiple record count to around 400, so it might not
add much value.
