This seems like a pretty elementary question, but I can't find an
answer to it. How do you go about creating chess diagrams in a Word document? I'd like to write some notes to kind of build a little Word "database" about games I've seen or played, or positions in books that were particularly interesting to me. I have some database software, so this isn't exactly what I'm after..... I'd like to be able to write mostly words, but have the occasional diagram for ease of reading. Thanks, Shawn |

Check whatever chess tools you're already using ... if they have some way of cutting & pasting diagrams, see if it fits your style. You need to create a special paragraph style for diagram rows, though. If you set the diagram in 16pt, line spacing should be that measure (16pt) *exactly*. Anything else will probably mess things up. Look at http://www.enpassant.dk/chess/dtpeng.htm for more ideas. -- Anders Thulin ath*algonet.se http://www.algonet.se/~ath |

Check on this page: http://www.chessvariants.com/d.font/fonts.html
In particular look at FEN2DIAG for Word macro(s)... works nicely last time I played with it. HTH "Anders Thulin" wrote in message ... Shawn B. I have used FEN2Diag extensively with Linares Font by Alpine Software. It
works very nicely for me in Windows XP/2000/98. Although I have had some problems with MS Word documents that are set up in columnar format. Fred. "Kerry Liles" wrote in message ... How do you go about creating chess diagrams in a Word document?
For years I have been using the Linares Diagram fonts developed by Alpine Electronics. They are very easy to understand and employ. They are available at the web-site www.partae.com. Taylor Kingston |

How do you go about creating chess diagrams in a Word document? 1. Throw Wintel machine off a cliff. 2. Get a Macintosh. 3. Download ChessWriter at http://www.vaz1.net/bill/chess/ChessWriter/index.html. ChessWriter enables one to drag and drop pieces to an empty board to make a diagram, or mouse in a gamescore from the first move and then there is a "copy board" menu item for copying the position to the Clipboard, or "insert diagram", after which the diagram can be copied and pasted. I edited the California Chess Journal for three years, and have written a book with ChessWriter. It is the killer application for chess authors and journalists. |

It looks like a great resource! Can you run it with System 10? And can you export to Acrobat? eg. I don't know if ChessWriter works under Operating System 10 -- I use a very old box so never migrated to 10. ChessWriter creates ASCII; it doesn't export to PDF itself, but I've created hundreds of PDFs after formatting ChessWriter files in PageMaker. |

I run both platforms and am thinking of updating the Mac side next. The program seems like such a good resource for chess I would like to try using it. Maybe I'll just try a download to MacX and see. If it doesn't work directly I'll write here again, and also try to pass it through Pagemaker as you suggest. These days the demand is for media-independent output, and therefore the main program to support would be InDesign. Cordially, Phil |
