To give an extreme example, John Warlick of the US Virgin Islands had a 2205 FIDE rating and a 1540 USCF rating. Maybe he played his last USCF tournament in 1983. I know two people with higher FIDE ratings than USCF ratings. Both are over the hill players who got their FIDEs 6-7 years ago. If they played in FIDE events they'd lose points for sure. I don't know if it's statistically possible to have the situation you mention, since there's a good deal of inter-playing among rating groups except for the over-2700 crowd. At any rate what you're claiming is counter-intuitive. You'll have to prove it with some concrete examples, and not just one guy from the Virgin Islands. Tell you what...without looking up ratings give me 15 relatively low-rated NY players who you believe may be FIDE rated. I'll look them up. Angelo Ken Sloan has a website about this, with hundreds of examples. I recommend you look at it. It is on the University of Alabama website. Sam Sloan |

I can tell this is going to be one of those threads. So Ken, did you ever go to Blimpies when you lived in Hoboken? I worked there for three summers, and my mother worked in the bookstore at SIT. My father is an alum also, but not a graduate. I'm sure there was something inaccurate in that last sentence. Ang "Sam Sloan" wrote in message ... Somewhere, NJ. April 1, 2004 -- I'm fascinated by your ideas on geography and identity. You should write a book debunking commonly-held beliefs about residence, location, inhabitation, and other subjects we mortals have cloaked in myth and mysticism. You can call it, "Where I Wasn't and Am'nt -- a critical look at the wherewithall of non-entities and no-there-there wheres." He who were, am, organ. "Kenneth Sloan" wrote in message ... I happen to be at least 2200 USCF in strength, and I should not be confident of necessarily 'beating Karpov from that' opening position. As an example, I have played many (non-blitz) games against a USCF expert with a well-established rating, usually 2000-2100 USCF (peak rating 2125), and my performance rating was higher than 2200 USCF. Gee. You are really good. Almost as good as Mig Greengard who informs us that he is a 2300 strength player, even though his USCF rating is 1834. http://www.64.com/uscf/ratings/12525629 For the record, I have no connection to Michael Greengard (aka 'Mig'). Sam Sloan's latest attempt to troll me by fabricating a spurious comparison between me and Mr Greengard warrants no further response beyond disdain. --Nick |
