Just wondering, do people use computers to show opening book moves during a
game? either to show suggested moves or just show percentages after the
fact?
Is either legal/common practice?
Just curious, I keep getting waxed. If I can make it through the opening I
can do well. other times I cant defend a guy from cleaning me out with his
queen.

It says I'm 1290 now but I've only played a few rated games so not sure when
this will become accurate.

Hi,
I play on there, using a book (batsford modern chess openings)or
similar is fine in correspondence chess, which i guess is the same as
an opening tree type thing on a pc programme, I sometimes use MCO if
i'm playing one of the many openings i donr know,
also if you know your rough fide rating ,your correspondence rating
will be about 400 or so points higher due to less stress, more planning
,thinking time etc and in some cases the use of fritz, chessmaster and
the like !!!!

cheers eers
jonnywildboar

PS challenge me to a game if you want for a bit of fun

In over the board chess using an opening book is not allowed and is
considered cheating. Of course, this doesn't mean people don't do it.
Occasionally I see messages on the server about people being caught
using computer assistance and having their rating removed. In
correspondence chess using an opening book and databases is allowed as
long as you don't use computer assistance in making your moves. You
might like to look at www.letsplaychess.com if you are interested in
email chess.

jb,

I don't know about Playchess.com, but on ICC (www.chessclub.com) using
computers or opening books of any kind is prohibited. That doesn't mean that
people don't do it, but you have to agree not to use them to play on their
server. I have not run across very many folks on ICC where I thought they
were cheating. On Yahoo it's rampant.
