Hehe I recently went to a Kids on Broadway production of Chess the musical
and they used the yogurt for a scene in which the american accuses the russian of getting certain colored yogurt signals. *curtsy* Sara "Avanti" wrote in message ... Mike Nolan wrote: Korchnoi objected to any signs that Karpov was getting assistance _ It has been a long time since I read about this, but, the way I remember it, the yogurt protest was really a retaliation to some protest from Karpov's camp that was considered to be silly by Korchnoi. Does anyone else remember reading this? As I remember it was deemed that depending on the flavour of the yoghurt, was in effect some code and a way of cheating. |

This reminds me of a game I played in Birmingham in the early 90's. I
showed up a few minutes late for the morning round on the 2nd or 3rd day of the tournament. I was quite surprised to see that I was paired against someone I had already played and he was sitting there ready to play me - and it was the director! Fortunately they managed to switch my opponent with the opponent of a friend I was at the tournament with (we had showed up late after a trip to McDonalds). Not wanting to eat the board, I'd leave the game after each move to go eat a little bit more of my breakfast in the other room - I figured that was more polite than eating at the board. I was playing an Evan's Gambit which I had memorized pretty well in those days. My opponent apparently got tired of me leaving the board and complainted to me about it. I think I said something like: "I don't have to stay at the board, but I do have to eat breakfast!". --- Douglas L Stewart "Doctor Who" wrote in message om... It is considered bad manners, and my opponent would not be allowed to eat at my board. I see. Would he be allowed to eat at HIS board? Manners are different in different places. For instance, I was once listening to Radio Exterior de Espana, and they explained that when you bring your meal on a railroad train, you are SUPPOSED to offer to share with others in the same compartment and they are SUPPOSED to refuse with thanks. When I attended a US Open in Boston, in my early twenties, I brought a couple slices of bread and butter to eat each evening at 10, to keep me going. I am sorry that "Doctor Who" (sorry they cancelled your TV program) feels that this is bad manners, by himself and by no other authorities whom he might care to identify, nor for any reason that anyone might care to state. A brief diversion from foodstuffs, but I just read something by Mark Taimanov about Fischer in their famous match game. Taimanov said he got up after his move and paced around on his side of the stage [as he usually did] but Fischer made a complaint about it's distracting effect on his 'trance' to the referree. Whispering in Taimanov's ear, the Ref said he couldn't allow Fischer's complaint because it was Taimanov's right to pace his own side of the stage. Taimanov suggested a compromise, he would no longer pace if Fischer would stop beating a tattoo with his feet under the table. This compromise was accepted. No food was thrown! However, 6 years ago at a scholastics event I had to admonish a young player for throwing a knife across the table at his brother. The thrower defended himself by stating that his brother was losing and could play much better if he only woke up and took the game more seriously, therefore throwing the knife "which wasn't even sharp" was in effect a benevolent act. His brother loyaly supported this explanation, and said that he was trying to get the game over quickly so that he could have lunch "and play better later." With the wisdom of [a desperate] Solomon I chose not to notice that both Kings were in check, and moved on to another board covered in some sticky substance [spilt Coke] which was rising in the air with every piece move.
